Chapter 7 - The Unspoken Vow

The drive back to Lake Forest was spent in complete, heavy silence.

The armored SUV cut through the midnight rain, its engine humming softly beneath the floorboards. Grace sat in the corner of the leather seat, staring out at the blurred city lights, her mind spinning out of control.

When they finally arrived at the estate, Dominic opened her door himself. He guided her into the warm, quiet foyer, leading her into his private study.

He poured two fingers of amber bourbon into a crystal tumbler, turning to face her.

"I apologize," Dominic said quietly, his posture rigid. "I was forced to make that declaration to protect you. In our world, a 'fiancée' of a syndicate boss is sacred under high law. If I had not claimed you, Carmine would have ordered your execution to close the security leak."

Grace looked at him, her velvet dress rustling as she stepped closer to his heavy oak desk. "You don't have to apologize for saving my life again, Dominic."

Dominic set his glass down, looking at her with a raw intensity that made the air feel electric. "It isn't just a political shield, Grace."

Grace froze. "What do you mean?"

Dominic walked around the desk until he was standing right in front of her. He reached out, his broad, scarred hand gently touching her cheek, his thumb brushing over her lower lip.

"I haven't felt alive in three years, Grace," Dominic whispered, his voice laced with a deep, aching honesty. "Since my wife died, I lived in a cemetery. I built a empire out of blood and stone just to keep the darkness away. But then you walked into that diner with dirt on your apron and fire in your eyes."

He leaned down, his forehead resting against hers, his warm breath fanning across her lips.

"You brought my son back to life," he murmured. "And you brought me back with him. I don't want a marriage of convenience, Grace. I want you. I want your hands in mine. I want your voice in this house. I want you to be Noah's mother, and my wife."

Grace felt tears prick her eyes. She looked up into the face of the man the entire city feared—a man who had killed without mercy hours earlier, yet held her as if she were made of delicate glass.

She raised her hands between them, forming the gestures clearly against his chest: I love you.

May you like

Dominic stared at her hands, then looked up into her eyes, a look of profound, beautiful wonder breaking across his face. He didn't just understand the sign; he felt it in every fiber of his being.

He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his body, and brought his lips down onto hers in a deep, passionate kiss that tasted of rain, bourbon, and a promise that would never be broken.
