Chapter 2 — The Woman They Tried to Erase

The storm had finally begun to weaken.
By dawn, the relentless rain that had battered Chicago throughout the night had faded into a steady drizzle, leaving the city wrapped in a gray silence that felt almost unnatural.
Inside the Cross Medical Clinic, however, no one slept.
Doctors moved briskly through spotless corridors. Nurses whispered updates into headsets. Security guards stood at every entrance—not because the clinic expected trouble, but because trouble had a habit of finding Declan Cross.
Nora Caldwell woke to the soft hum of machines.
For a few blissful seconds, she remembered nothing.
Then everything came rushing back.
Ethan.
The mansion.
The accusations.
The freezing road.
The black SUVs.
Declan Cross.
Instinctively, both hands flew to her stomach.
The baby shifted.
A tiny movement.
Just enough.
Fresh tears filled Nora's eyes.
"Good morning."
Doctor Sofia Marino entered carrying a tablet and a warm smile.
"I've seen happier patients."
Nora wiped her face quickly.
"I've had happier mornings."
The doctor pulled up a chair beside the bed.
"Your daughter is stronger today."
"You know she's a girl?"
Sofia nodded.
"The ultrasound confirmed it."
Nora smiled through trembling lips.
"I always knew."
The doctor hesitated.
"There is something else."
Nora's smile faded.
"The laboratory finished the second analysis."
"The poison?"
"I'm afraid so."
Sofia placed several printed reports on the bedside table.
"It wasn't accidental exposure."
Nora stared at the pages without reading them.
"The dosage increased every week."
"Meaning?"
"Meaning whoever administered it wanted your pregnancy to fail naturally."
The words landed like stones.
Nora slowly remembered the last month.
Every evening Ethan had insisted on making her tea.
Every prenatal vitamin handed to her personally by the Caldwell family physician.
Every reassuring smile.
Every kiss on her forehead before bed.
Every lie.
"My God..."
She covered her mouth.
"He was trying to kill our baby."
Doctor Marino didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
The evidence already had.
Outside the room, Declan stood before a wall of surveillance monitors.
Luca Romano approached carrying a thin black folder.
"We found the physician."
Declan looked up.
"The Caldwell family doctor?"
Luca nodded.
"Dr. Henry Walsh."
"Talk."
"He resigned yesterday."
"Yesterday?"
"Three hours before Mrs. Caldwell was thrown out."
Declan's expression remained unreadable.
"Where is he now?"
"We don't know."
"You've never said those words to me before."
Luca sighed.
"Because I've never had to."
Declan accepted the folder.
Inside was a photograph of an aging physician with silver hair and kind eyes.
"He has a wife?"
"Yes."
"Children?"
"One daughter."
"Grandchildren?"
"Two."
Declan closed the folder.
"He didn't disappear voluntarily."
"You think someone took him?"
"I think someone made sure he couldn't testify."
Luca nodded slowly.
"I'll expand the search."
Declan stopped him.
"No."
Luca frowned.
"No?"
"They're expecting us to look."
Declan's dark eyes settled on the Chicago skyline beyond the glass.
"So we're going to look somewhere else."
Forty miles away...
A luxury penthouse overlooked Lake Michigan.
Celeste Marrow stood before a mirror while fastening a diamond earring.
To anyone watching, she appeared perfectly composed.
Inside, she was calculating.
Her assistant entered quietly.
"The board meeting starts at nine."
"I know."
"The financial press wants a statement regarding Mrs. Caldwell."
Celeste smiled.
"There is no Mrs. Caldwell."
The assistant blinked.
"Pardon?"
"There is only a former employee under criminal investigation."
She adjusted the collar of her white suit.
"Words matter."
The assistant lowered her eyes.
"Yes, Ms. Marrow."
Celeste picked up a leather folder.
"What about Ethan?"
"He'll attend remotely."
"Good."
She walked toward the elevator.
"If anyone asks..."
She smiled again.
"...tell them Nora Caldwell fled the city after embezzling company funds."
The elevator doors closed.
The lie had officially become strategy.
Back at the clinic...
Nora insisted on leaving her bed.
The nurses objected.
Doctor Marino objected.
Declan objected.
She ignored all of them.
"I've been lying down for twelve hours."
"You almost went into premature labor."
"I know."
"You need rest."
"I need to think."
Declan watched as she slowly walked toward a large window overlooking the lake.
Morning light reflected off the water.
Beautiful.
Peaceful.
Completely indifferent.
"I keep asking myself..."
She rested one hand on the glass.
"...what I missed."
Declan remained silent.
"I lived with him for four years."
She laughed bitterly.
"I shared breakfast with him every morning."
Another pause.
"I slept beside him every night."
Her shoulders trembled.
"How do you hide that much hatred?"
Declan answered quietly.
"You don't."
She turned.
"What?"
"You hide ambition."
The words hung in the room.
"Hatred is loud."
He stepped beside her.
"Greed is patient."
Nora looked away.
"I thought he loved me."
"He probably believed he did."
She frowned.
"You think people like Ethan can love?"
Declan looked out toward the lake.
"I think people like Ethan love what they can own."
The answer chilled her more than the storm ever had.
A sharp knock interrupted them.
Luca entered.
His expression was grim.
"Boss."
Declan immediately recognized the look.
"What happened?"
"They found Dr. Walsh."
"Alive?"
Luca hesitated.
"No."
Silence.
Nora instinctively wrapped both arms around herself.
"Where?"
"Inside his car."
"Cause?"
"Single gunshot."
Declan's jaw tightened.
"Suicide?"
Luca shook his head.
"The police will probably call it that."
"But?"
"But the bullet entered the back of his head."
Nora's breathing stopped.
Someone wasn't cleaning up mistakes.
Someone was erasing witnesses.
And they were moving faster than anyone had imagined.
Declan slowly closed his eyes.
The game had changed.
Whoever was behind Nora's attempted murder wasn't simply wealthy.
They were organized.
Disciplined.
And absolutely determined to make sure she disappeared forever.
He looked toward Luca.
"Increase security."
"Already done."
"No visitors."
"Understood."
Declan's next words carried the quiet certainty that had built his empire.
"From this moment forward..."
He looked at Nora.
"...Mrs. Caldwell and her unborn daughter are under the protection of the Cross Family."
Every guard in the hallway heard the declaration.
Every member of his organization would hear it within the hour.
In Chicago's underworld, those words meant only one thing.
Anyone who touched Nora Caldwell...
Declared war on Declan Cross himself.
Miles away, as Ethan Caldwell entered the Whitlock board meeting with complete confidence, he smiled politely at the directors gathered around the polished oak table.
He believed his greatest obstacle had been removed.
He had no idea that, at that very moment, the most feared man in Chicago had just made his wife—and the child Ethan wanted erased—the most heavily protected people in the city.

And before the week was over, Ethan Caldwell would discover that some storms did not end when the rain stopped.
Some only began.
