CHAPTER 2 — THE MAN WHO OWNED THE SHADOWS

The moment Kian Moretti stepped fully into the storage room, the temperature seemed to drop.

Not metaphorically.

Aurora felt it—like the air itself had learned fear.

Zayn didn’t move. Didn’t flinch. He only stood a little straighter, as if being caught by the most dangerous man in New York was merely a scheduling inconvenience.

“Kian!” he said brightly. “You came fast.”

Kian’s eyes didn’t leave Aurora.

“That was not the point,” he replied calmly.

Behind him, one of the guards shifted slightly, hand near his jacket. The kind of movement that meant a situation could end in seconds.

Aurora instinctively stepped back, placing herself between Zayn and the men.

Kian noticed.

His gaze lowered to her stance.

Then to her bruised wrist again.

“You’re trembling,” he said.

“I’m not,” Aurora lied immediately.

A pause.

Kian tilted his head slightly, like a man evaluating a problem that had already been solved incorrectly.

“You are,” he corrected.

1. The Witch Outside

The storage room door rattled again.

Regina’s voice cut through the wood.

“If you think hiding with your little fantasies will save you, you’re more delusional than your father ever was!”

Aurora flinched at the name.

Kian’s gaze shifted toward the door.

“Who is that?” he asked.

“My stepmother,” Aurora said quickly. “She’s… dangerous.”

Kian almost looked amused.

Almost.

Then he said something that made the guards behind him shift uneasily.

“Everyone is dangerous,” he said. “The question is whether they are expensive to fix.”

Aurora blinked.

“That’s not normal.”

“No,” Kian agreed. “It’s efficient.”

2. Zayn’s Declaration

Zayn tugged at Kian’s sleeve.

“She said yes,” he announced proudly.

Silence.

Kian looked down at his son.

“Excuse me?”

“I asked her to marry me,” Zayn said seriously. “So the witch would go away.”

A beat of silence passed.

Even the guards looked like they were deciding whether to laugh or pray.

Kian slowly turned his head toward Aurora.

“You accepted this proposal,” he said.

Aurora exhaled shakily.

“It was a child’s joke.”

“It is not a joke to him.”

Zayn nodded vigorously. “It was strategic.”

Kian closed his eyes for exactly one second.

Then reopened them.

“Zayn,” he said flatly. “We are discussing this later.”

3. The First Threat

The storage door burst open.

Regina stepped in.

Two men followed behind her.

Aurora froze.

Kian didn’t move.

Regina smiled when she saw him.

“Oh,” she said. “I didn’t realize this restaurant hired private actors.”

Her gaze flicked over him.

Then Zayn.

Then Aurora.

“Oh,” she repeated slower. “I see.”

Her voice sharpened.

“That child is coming with me.”

Aurora stepped forward immediately.

“No.”

Regina laughed.

“You don’t get to say no anymore. You were sold. Paperwork is already in motion.”

Kian finally spoke.

“Sold by whom?”

Regina looked at him like he was a stain.

“By the man who owed me money,” she said. “Now step aside.”

Kian studied her for a moment.

Then asked calmly:

“How much is she worth to you?”

Aurora froze.

Regina smiled wider.

“Fifty thousand,” she said.

Kian nodded.

“Understood.”

He pulled out his phone.

And made a single call.

“Transfer five million to escrow,” he said.

Silence.

Even Regina stopped smiling.

“…Repeat that,” she said.

Kian didn’t look at her.

“Five million. In exchange for a legal release of any claim to the woman and any association with her identity.”

Aurora’s breath caught.

“That’s insane,” she whispered.

Kian glanced at her briefly.

“No,” he said. “That is standard pricing for interference.”

4. The Moment Power Shifts

Regina’s face changed.

“What are you?” she demanded.

Kian finally looked directly at her.

“I am the reason people like you ask permission before entering rooms they don’t understand.”

The guards behind him stepped forward slightly.

Not threatening.

Positioning.

Regina suddenly realized something:

She was no longer in control of the room.

She was inside someone else’s territory.

5. Zayn Chooses

Zayn tugged Aurora’s sleeve again.

“I told you,” he said proudly. “My dad fixes things.”

Aurora knelt slightly.

“This is not fixing,” she whispered. “This is… too much.”

Kian watched her carefully.

For the first time, something unreadable flickered in his eyes.

“You think I should have done less?” he asked.

Aurora hesitated.

“I think you don’t even know me.”

Kian answered instantly.

“No.”

A pause.

“But I know what was done to you.”

That silence hit differently.

Not romantic.

Not soft.

Recognizing.

6. The Exit That Was Not a Choice

Regina’s phone buzzed.

She looked at it.

Her face drained.

The transfer confirmation.

Five million.

Legal release.

Permanent severance.

Her authority over Aurora’s life—

gone.

She looked up, furious.

“This isn’t over,” she snapped.

Kian nodded.

“You are correct.”

A pause.

“It is finished.”

7. Outside the Restaurant

The night air outside felt different.

Cleaner.

Louder.

Like reality had resumed after being interrupted.

Aurora stood frozen beside Kian’s car.

Zayn climbed in like it was his natural habitat.

Kian remained beside her.

“You will be safe now,” he said.

Aurora laughed weakly.

“That’s what people say before everything gets worse.”

Kian looked at her.

“Then I will be what prevents that pattern.”

She studied him.

“You don’t even know me.”

Kian answered:

“I don’t need to know you to correct what is wrong around you.”

May you like

A pause.

“That is what power is for.”
