Chapter 5 - The Corporate Strike

The news of Delaney Mercer’s arrest sent shockwaves through the upper echelons of Nashville high society, but the real earthquake was about to hit the boardrooms of Wall Street.

At 7:00 AM on Monday morning, the glass doors of Sterling Financial Tower shattered under the weight of federal agents executing a search warrant. Julian Sterling was sitting in his corner office on the 45th floor, sipping an espresso and reviewing the projected takeover of Rowan Mercer’s company, Mercer Global, when the door opened without a knock.

Rowan walked in first. He was dressed in a sharp navy suit, his face worn from three sleepless nights at the hospital, but his eyes held an unshakeable, terrifying focus.

Behind him were four officers from the FBI’s financial crimes division and Detective Miller.

Julian Sterling slowly set his espresso cup down, his expression hardening into an icy mask. "Rowan. I didn't expect you back in corporate circles so soon after your... domestic tragedy."

"It wasn't a tragedy, Julian," Rowan said, stepping up to the massive mahogany desk. "It was an assassination attempt. And it failed."

Sterling chuckled softly, leaning back in his leather chair. "I have no idea what you’re referring to. If your ex-wife went crazy, that’s between you, her, and the family court. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a board meeting to finalize the acquisition of your remaining shares."

"There won't be an acquisition," FBI Special Agent Vance stepped forward, placing a thick stack of federal arrest warrants onto the desk. "Julian Sterling, you are under arrest for corporate espionage, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and murder-for-hire."

Sterling’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "This is ridiculous. On what evidence?"

"Delaney Mercer sang like a canary three hours ago," Detective Miller chimed in, grinning thinly. "Turns out, when facing life without parole in a maximum-security prison, people get very chatty about who gave them the encrypted phones, who transferred money to the Cayman accounts, and who wired the house to disable the security systems."

Sterling’s face lost all its color. He instinctively reached for his desk phone, but Agent Vance slammed his hand down, pulling Sterling out of his chair and forcing him onto his stomach over the desk.

"You picked the wrong family to destroy, Julian," Rowan said, leaning down so his voice was inches from Sterling’s ear as the cuffs clicked around the CFO's wrists. "You wanted my company? I’m buying yours for pennies on the dollar by noon today. Your board just ousted you thirty minutes ago when the SEC froze all your assets."

As the FBI dragged Julian Sterling through the crowded floor of his own headquarters in front of hundreds of whispering employees, Rowan stood by the elevators, watching the man who had tried to erase his children dragged away in chains.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. It was a text from Marcus:

Elsie is awake. She’s asking for you.

Rowan left the corporate world behind without another thought, running toward the hospital.

When he entered Room 402 of the PICU, the scene brought him to his knees—this time, not out of panic, but out of sheer, overwhelming gratitude.

Elsie was sitting up in bed, color restored to her rosy cheeks, holding a juice box with both hands. Micah was sitting beside her on the mattress, carefully reading her a picture book, pointing at the illustrations with a bright smile.

"Dad!" Elsie gasped, her voice raspy but full of life.

Rowan closed the distance, wrapping both of his arms around both of his children, pulling them tightly to his heart.

"I'm here," Rowan wept, pressing kisses into their hair. "I'm right here. No one is ever going to hurt you again. I swear it."

Micah hugged his father’s neck tightly. "We're safe now, Dad?"

"You're safe, buddy," Rowan whispered. "Forever."
