Chapter 8 - The Legal Tsunami

The jury took less than ninety minutes to deliberate. In the high-stakes world of federal criminal trials, a quick verdict almost always means total victory for the prosecution.

When the judge called the court back to order, the room was so quiet you could hear the distant rumble of the traffic on the highway below. Simon and Meredith stood at the defense table, their hands chained to their waists, their posture completely broken under the weight of the impending judgment.

The Verdict RecordSimon Thorne:

Felony Corporate Fraud & Bid Rigging – GUILTY

Interstate Extortion and Financial Coercion – GUILTY

Aggravated Domestic Assault resulting in Severe Bodily Injury – GUILTY

Meredith Thorne:

Conspiracy to Commit Corporate Fraud – GUILTY

Tampering with Evidence and Witness Intimidation – GUILTY

Accessory after the Fact to Felony Assault – GUILTY

Meredith didn't make a scene this time. She didn't shriek or reach for her designer sunglasses. She simply sat down heavily in her chair, her eyes staring blankly at the polished mahogany table as the judge ordered the immediate seizure of all their remaining personal property to satisfy the multi-million dollar federal restitution order.

The judge turned her eyes to Simon, her expression hardening into a line of absolute judicial severity.

"Mr. Thorne," the judge said, her voice echoing through the silent room. "You grew up with every advantage this society can offer. You had wealth, education, and status. Yet you chose to use those tools to operate a criminal enterprise, to exploit the city that supported you, and to viciously assault a young woman who trusted you. The law protects the vulnerable from the powerful, Mr. Thorne. Today, you find out exactly how powerless you are."

The SentenceSimon Thorne was sentenced to twenty years in a federal maximum-security penitentiary, with no possibility of parole, to be served concurrently with his state assault charges.

Meredith Thorne was sentenced to ten years in a federal correctional facility for her role in the conspiracy and evidence tampering.

The Thorne estate, the luxury vehicles, the corporate holdings, and the hidden offshore funds were legally transferred into a liquidating trust managed by Callie’s legal counsel, with 100% of the proceeds designated for the creation of the Callie Miller Foundation for Victims of Domestic Abuse.

As the marshals led the mother and son away through the side doors of the courtroom, the chains clinking against their prison jumpsuits, Simon looked back at the gallery one last time. He didn't look at his lawyers; he looked at me.

I didn't smile. I didn't gloat. I simply adjusted my denim jacket, stood up, and walked out into the warm Texas sunshine where Callie was waiting for me in the passenger seat of the old Ford F-150.
