Chapter 5 - The Digital Footprints

While the family court kept me safe from immediate contact, Detective Nolan was quietly dismantling the narrative my parents had built around Brittany’s life.

A week after the hearing, Detective Nolan and Angela visited Martha’s home on Willow Lane. We sat on the warm back porch, drinking sweet iced tea while the afternoon sun filtered through the oak tree leaves.

"We executed a search warrant on your parents' house yesterday morning, Emily," Detective Nolan said, setting a folder on the wooden patio table.

My heart did a small flip. "What did you find?"

"We seized Brittany’s laptop, her phone, and your father’s home office computer," Detective Nolan explained. "Our forensic digital team spent thirty-six hours analyzing the hard drives. We found something that changes the entire nature of this prosecution."

She opened the file, revealing printed screenshots of text messages and social media exchanges.

"For the past eighteen months," Detective Nolan revealed, "Brittany was running a private, anonymous social media account where she posted video clips and diary entries boasting about her control over you. She referred to you as her 'personal servant' and detailed specific instances where she intentionally injured you to get out of taking exams or doing chores."

I stared at the printed text on the page.

“Told my sister if she doesn’t take my online history quiz I’ll break her fingers. She did it in ten minutes lol.”

“Dad gave me $500 to buy new shoes because I had a 'stress outburst' and smashed Emily’s tablet against the wall. Works every time.”

My eyes filled with fresh tears as the cold reality burned into my brain. Brittany hadn't been suffering from uncontrollable, tragic "mental health episodes." She was a calculated, abusive manipulator who had learned early on that my father would pay any price and cover up any crime to keep his family's reputation intact.

"And your father knew," Detective Nolan added, her tone turning dark. "We found deleted email exchanges between your dad and a private reputation management firm from two years ago. He paid them fifteen thousand dollars to erase public police records from an incident where Brittany assaulted a classmate at her private high school."

"He bought her way out of trouble," I whispered. "Just like he always did."

"He didn't just buy her way out," Angela Moore chimed in softly. "He enabled a predator inside his own home while sacrificing his younger daughter to keep up appearances. That isn't just bad parenting, Emily. That is criminal negligence and child endangerment."

Detective Nolan picked up her folder. "The District Attorney’s office is upgrading the charges tomorrow morning. Brittany is facing two counts of felony aggravated assault and one count of false imprisonment. And your father... your father is being indicted on two counts of felony child endangerment and obstruction of justice."

I sat back against the wooden chair, looking out at the green lawn.

For years, I had believed that if I just tried harder, if I was quieter, if I didn't provoke Brittany, the abuse would stop. But looking at the cold digital proof, I finally saw the truth: the game had been rigged from the very beginning.
