Chapter 9 - The New Master of Grayhaven

Six months later, the spring thaw transformed the sprawling grounds of Grayhaven House into a sea of blooming white magnolias and emerald-green lawns.
The iron gates were no longer symbols of fear; the armed checkpoints had been replaced by friendly security staff, and the ominous aura that had once hung over the estate had been washed away by sunlight and laughter.
Inside the grand foyer, the marble floors shone like glass.
I stood near the bottom of the curved staircase, wearing a light floral dress, watching the chaos unfold in the living room. Lila was running across the Persian rug in her bright yellow rain boots—her favorite footwear, rain or shine—chasing a golden retriever puppy that Damian had bought her for her fifth birthday.
Behind her ear, her pink hearing device blinked cheerfully as she giggled, signing wildly at the puppy to sit.
Heavy footsteps echoed down the staircase.
Damian walked down the steps, dressed in a tailored charcoal suit without a tie, looking more relaxed and healthy than he had in a decade. He caught my eye as he reached the bottom step, walking over and wrapping his arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder.
“She’s going to wear those boots out by summer,” Damian murmured into my ear, a fond smile touching his lips.
“Let her,” I leaned back against his chest, smiling as I felt the steady, unbreakable rhythm of his heart beneath his jacket. “Yellow is her color.”
“It’s the color of this entire house now,” Damian noted softly, kissing the side of my neck. “You turned a fortress of blood and ledgers into a home, Elena.”
“We did it together,” I corrected him, turning around in his arms to wrap my arms around his neck.
From across the room, Lila stopped chasing the puppy, noticing us standing together near the stairs. She trotted over, clutching her worn-out cloth rabbit under one arm, and tugged gently on the hem of Damian’s trousers.
Damian knelt down instantly, meeting her at eye level.
Lila signed a quick sequence of gestures with her small hands, then reached out and pressed her palm firmly against the center of his chest—right over his heart.
Damian closed his eyes, covering her tiny hand with his own large palm, a look of profound peace washing over his face. He looked up at me, his dark eyes shining with a love that no syndicate, no poison, and no empire could ever touch.
“She says your heart sounds strong today, Dad,” Lila’s voice, clear and bright, echoed through the grand foyer as she spoke the words aloud with the careful practice of her speech therapy.
Damian opened his eyes, pulling both Lila and me into a tight, unbreakable embrace against his chest.

“It is, sweetheart,” Damian whispered, kissing the top of Lila’s head while pressing his lips to mine. “It finally is.”
And for the first time in the history of Grayhaven House, the east wing doors stood wide open, letting the sunlight flood into every corner of a home that had finally found its heart.
