Chapter 8 - The Shadow's Last Gasp

Two weeks before our scheduled wedding, a sudden shockwave threatened to disrupt our newfound peace.
I was sitting in my brand-new office at the Sarah Davis Foundation headquarters when my phone rang. It was Victoria Vance.
"Khloe," Victoria said, her tone serious. "I just received a call from the State's Attorney. Darren Vance has escaped from custody during a transport transfer to the Cook County Department of Corrections."
My blood ran cold. The pen slipped from my fingers, rattling across the desk. "He escaped?"
"He hijacked a transport van during a severe rainstorm two hours ago," Victoria explained quickly. "The police have set up roadblocks, but he's desperate, Khloe. His federal trial was set for next month, and he was facing thirty years. He has nothing left to lose."
Panic, old and sharp, seized my chest. "Lily... she's at daycare!"
"Luke is already on his way to get her with his security team," Victoria reassured me. "I need you to stay inside your office, Khloe. Do not go home, do not go out to your car. The police are sending an escort to bring you to Luke's private residence."
I hung up the phone, my hands shaking violently. For three months, I had felt untouchable, surrounded by love, wealth, and legal security. But Darren was an animal backed into a corner, and animals in corners were unpredictable and dangerous.
I grabbed my purse, grabbed my coat, and made my way toward the private elevator in the foundation lobby.
As I stepped into the empty subterranean parking garage beneath the building, the overhead lights flickered ominously. The damp air smelled of motor oil and wet concrete.
Footsteps echoing behind me.
I froze, turning around slowly.
Out from behind a concrete pillar stepped Darren. He looked wild, gaunt, and terrified. His clothes were soaked with rain, his hair was matted to his forehead, and his eyes were bloodshot. In his right hand, he held a heavy steel crowbar he had scavenged from the construction site nearby.
"Hello, Khloe," Darren rasped, his voice trembling with manic rage. "Did you miss me?"
"Darren," I said, forcing my voice to remain calm, taking a slow step backward toward the security booth. "The police are looking for you. You won't get ten miles out of the city."
"I don't care about getting out of the city!" he screamed, stepping closer, swinging the crowbar threateningly. "You ruined my life! You put me in a cage! You took fourteen million dollars that was supposed to be my ticket out of this miserable city!"
"You ruined your own life, Darren!" I countered, keeping my eyes locked on his. "You forged signatures, you stole from an orphan, and you tried to freeze your own daughter!"
"She's not my daughter!" he shrieked. "She was just a leverage point! And now you're going to give me the offshore account transfer codes, or you're never walking out of this garage!"
He lunged forward, swinging the steel bar directly at my head.
I ducked instinctively, the heavy metal whistling inches over my hair and smashing into the driver's side window of a parked sedan with a deafening CRASH.
I scrambled across the slick concrete, trying to reach the emergency alarm button near the exit gate. Darren grabbed the back of my coat, YANKING me backward onto the floor. Pain flared through my shoulder as I hit the ground.
"You think you're so smart now with your rich boyfriend?" Darren spat, standing over me, raising the crowbar with both hands. "Let's see how much he wants you when—"
TIRES SCREECHED.
A black SUV tore around the corner of the garage, its headlights blinding Darren. Before he could react, the driver's side door flew open, and Luke sprinted out like a cannon shot.
Luke didn't hesitate. He tackled Darren mid-air, slamming him onto the concrete floor with brutal force. The crowbar clattered away, rolling into the drain.
Darren fought like a madman, throwing wild punches, but Luke was fueled by pure, terrifying protective rage. Luke pinned Darren's arms behind his back, driving his knee into his spine until Darren gasped for air, completely immobilized.
Sirens echoed in the distance, growing louder by the second. Within moments, three Chicago Police cruisers screeched into the garage, their red and blue lights flashing against the damp concrete walls.
Four officers rushed in, snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto Darren's wrists and dragging him off the floor.
Luke immediately dropped to his knees beside me, his hands shaking as he cupped my face. "Khloe! My God, are you okay? Did he hurt you?"
"I'm okay," I gasped, wrapping my arms around his neck, burying my face in his shoulder. "I'm okay, Luke... you came."
"I will always come," he whispered fiercely, holding me as if he would never let go. "I will always come for you."

Darren was dragged away, screaming curses into the rain, heading toward a federal supermax facility from which he would never escape.
The final shadow of my past was officially gone forever.
