Chapter 4 - Sub-Level 4

The subterranean garage of Bennett Tower was a vast, cold cavern of brushed concrete and fluorescent lighting. Marcus maneuvered the SUV into a private loading bay tucked behind the main generator rooms—a space reserved exclusively for Arthur's private security detail.
"7:35 PM," Marcus said, glancing at the dashboard clock. "The board members are currently arriving on the 50th floor. Ethan and Vanessa arrived twenty minutes ago. They are in the executive lounge holding a pre-meeting cocktail with Julian and the three compromised board directors."
"Is the service corridor clear?" I asked, my heart beginning a slow, heavy thud against my ribs.
"Clear," Marcus replied, handing me a small earbud. "Place this in your left ear. Mr. Bennett is already in the boardroom. He is wearing a transmitter. You will hear everything happening on the 50th floor while you are in the vault."
I inserted the earbud. Immediately, a low rustle of voices and the clinking of glassware filled my ear.
"...Arthur is running late," I heard Ethan’s voice say. It was smooth, arrogant, completely unchanged. "Typical. The old man is trying to delay the inevitable. But once the vote is called at eight o'clock, his attendance doesn't matter anyway."
"Don't be too hard on him, darling," Vanessa’s sweet, calculated voice chimed in over the feed. "It must be difficult for him, watching his legacy crumble because he trusted the wrong girl."
A surge of ice water seemed to flood my veins. I clicked the earbud securely into place, opened the SUV door, and stepped out onto the cold concrete.
My heels clicked sharply against the floor as I walked toward the heavy steel door marked MAINTENANCE ACCESS - AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY.
I slid Arthur’s silver keycard into the reader. The light flashed green, and the magnetic lock disengaged with a heavy pneumatic hiss.
I stepped into the narrow service corridor, descending a concrete stairwell that led deeper into the foundation of the skyscraper. The air grew cooler, thicker with the smell of ozone and industrial air conditioning.
At the end of the hall stood the entrance to Sub-Level 4: a solid titanium double door equipped with an optical scanner, a key code pad, and a biometric thumbprint reader.
I approached the console. The screen was dark, glowing with a faint standby prompt: INSERT ADMINISTRATOR CREDENTIALS.
I reached out my hand. My thumb was still scarred from a winter burn I'd gotten trying to warm myself over a metal trash barrel three months ago, and my hand shook so violently I had to press my left wrist with my right hand to steady it.
What if it doesn't recognize me? I thought, panic rising like bile in my throat. What if the scar tissue ruined the ridge patterns?
I took a deep, shaky breath, closed my eyes, and pressed my right thumb flat against the glass scanner.
A thin red laser swept across my skin once.
Twice.
A long, agonizing beat of silence filled the hallway.
Then, a sharp, electronic chime rang out through the corridor, followed by a synthesized female voice:
WELCOME BACK, CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER BENNETT. DUAL-AUTHENTICATION OVERRIDE INITIATED. ENTER SECONDARY MASTER KEY.
I let out a breath I felt like I'd been holding for two years. I pulled the high-speed flash drive Arthur had provided from my clutch and inserted it into the console’s USB port.
The screen lit up with scrolling lines of green code as Arthur's master override bypassed Ethan’s security lockouts.
ACCESS GRANTED. VAULT UNLOCKED.
The titanium doors groaned, slowly sliding apart to reveal the cold, dark interior of the air-gapped server room. Blue LED lights illuminated long racks of processing units, humming quietly in the climate-controlled space.
I walked directly to Rack 09—the physical storage unit where the primary optical hard drives were kept.
In my earbud, the sound of a gavel striking a wooden table rang out clearly.
"It is 8:00 PM," Ethan’s voice announced over the transmitter. "I call this extraordinary meeting of the Bennett Enterprises Board of Directors to order. The first item on the agenda is the formal dissolution of the Bennett Housing Foundation and the liquidation of its eighteen percent voting equity."

My fingers flew across the vault's physical terminal keyboard.
"Come on," I whispered. "Where is the 2024 raw transaction log?"
