Chapter 9 - THE PROPOSAL OF LIGHT

Two years later.
A gentle snow was falling softly over the historic Vale family estate in Lake Placid, New York. The cozy wooden lodge was surrounded by snow-covered pine trees, smoking chimneys, and twinkling warm fairy lights wrapped around the wide porch railings.
Inside, a large stone fireplace crackled with warm, roaring logs.
It was Christmas Eve.
Commissioner Thomas Vale sat in a large leather armchair by the fire, reading a storybook to three-year-old Clara, who sat in his lap wearing footie pajamas, her big gray eyes wide with wonder as her grandfather pointed at the pictures.
Nearby, Detective Sarah Morrison and Marcus Vance were laughing while setting a massive wooden dining table with holiday roasted turkey, fresh baked pies, and warm spiced cider.
Elena stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, watching the quiet snow fall over the frozen lake. She wore a soft cream sweater, her dark hair pinned back with a pearl clip.
David stepped up behind her, sliding his arms gently around her waist, pulling her back against his chest. He rested his chin on her shoulder, feeling the warm, steady beat of her heart.
“What are you thinking about?” David whispered softly into her ear.
Elena leaned her head back against his shoulder, looking at the reflection of her family in the glass window—her father reading to Clara, her friends laughing by the fire, and the man standing beside her holding her tight.
“I was thinking,” Elena said, her voice filled with deep, serene peace, “that four years ago, I thought my life was defined by the worst thing that ever happened to me. I thought fear was going to be the background noise of my daughter’s life.”
David slowly turned her around so she was facing him.
He looked deeply into her eyes, his hands holding hers warmly against his chest.
“Fear doesn't live here anymore, Elena,” David said softly. “You filled every corner of your life with light, strength, and love.”
David reached into his coat pocket and knelt down on one knee onto the warm rug in front of the crackling fireplace.
From the armchair, Clara stopped listening to the storybook and gasped. “Look, Grandpa! David’s on his knee!”
Thomas Vale smiled warmly, closing the book and putting his arm around Clara.
David pulled out a simple, breathtaking platinum ring featuring a brilliant solitaire diamond that caught the warm light of the fire.
“Elena Rose Vale,” David said, his voice trembling slightly with profound emotion. “You are the strongest, most incredible woman I have ever known. You gave me a purpose, you gave me a home, and you let me love your daughter. Will you do me the honor of marrying me and letting me protect both of you for the rest of my life?”
Elena looked down at David. Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness spilled over her cheeks.
She didn't hesitate for a single second.
“Yes,” Elena whispered, stepping forward and sinking to her knees beside him, wrapping her arms around his neck. “Yes, David! A thousand times yes!”
David slipped the ring onto her finger, pulled her close, and kissed her deeply while the room erupted into cheers, applause, and joyful shouts!

Clara ran over on her little feet, throwing her tiny arms around both of them, giggling happily. “Yay! David’s staying forever!”
David pulled Clara into their hug, holding both Elena and Clara tightly against his heart under the warm, golden glow of the Christmas fire.
