Chapter 8 - The Gathering Storm

The diner was ruined, filled with shattered glass, spilled coffee, and two unconscious enforcers tied securely to the structural pillars in the basement with heavy industrial zip-ties.

“We have to go,” Enzo said, his voice shaking slightly as the adrenaline began to fade, the wound in his side leaking fresh blood through the linen wraps. He looked at Clara, who was comforting a sobbing Lily in her arms. “Luca knows you’re involved now. This place is no longer a sanctuary.”

Clara looked at her ruined diner, the only home she had known for four years. She wiped a tear from Lily’s cheek, then looked up at Enzo. There was no fear in her eyes now—only a deep, maternal resolve. “Where are we going?”

“To the south side,” Enzo said, his gray eyes fixing on hers. “To the old brewery. It’s time to call in the old guard.”

An hour later, a stolen delivery van slipped out of the diner’s back alley, driven by Clara, with Enzo slumped in the passenger seat and Lily tucked safely between the rows of bread crates in the back.

The old D’Angelo brewery was a massive, rusted brick monument to Chicago’s industrial past, hidden behind a maze of active train tracks and shipping containers. When the van pulled through the rusted iron gates, ten heavily armed men stepped out of the shadows, their weapons raised until they saw Enzo’s face through the windshield.

“Boss!” Marco shouted, running forward, his face filled with a mixture of disbelief and pure, unadulterated joy. “By God, you’re alive!”

Enzo climbed down from the van, his hand resting heavily on Clara’s shoulder for support. He looked at the gathered men—the few who hadn't fled, the few who still remembered what loyalty meant.

“Luca thinks he has won,” Enzo said, his voice echoing through the vast, cold space of the brewery. “He is hosting his victory dinner at Rosso’s tomorrow night. He has invited the city captains, the judges, the buyers. He thinks he is burying the D’Angelo name.”

He paused, his gaze tracking back to Clara and Lily, who were watching him from the van door. “We are going to attend that dinner, gentlemen. And we are going to ensure that Luca Ferraro is the only one who gets buried.”
