Chapter 9 - The Trial and Final Justice

Before the spring turned to summer, the final legal reckonings of the Blackwood scandal were settled in the Westmoreland County Superior Court.
Richard Vance, the CEO of Blackwood Logistics, pled guilty to multiple federal counts of racketeering, toxic dumping, and corporate espionage. He was sentenced to twenty-two years in a federal penitentiary and ordered to pay forty million dollars in environmental restitution.
Curtis Vance and Gregory Vance were both convicted of aggravated assault, illegal detention, and environmental destruction, receiving fifteen and twelve years respectively.
On the day the final verdicts were handed down, Daniel, Sarah, and Arthur Vance walked down the courthouse steps into the bright afternoon sun.
A crowd of reporters was waiting at the bottom of the stairs.
“Mr. Mercer! Is it true Mercer Freight has officially acquired Blackwood’s regional contracts?!” “Mrs. Jenkins! How does it feel to see your former employers go to prison?!”
Sarah stepped up to the podium set up on the courthouse lawn, adjusting the microphone calmly.
“Fourteen months ago,” Sarah said into the microphones, her voice strong and clear, carrying across the crowded square, “I was told that one person could not stand up against a multi-million-dollar system of corruption. I was told to be quiet, to take my loss, and to disappear.”
She looked across the crowd, finding Daniel’s eyes in the front row, standing beside Maya and Leo.
“But justice does not belong to the loudest or the wealthiest,” Sarah continued. “It belongs to those who care enough to look into the dark places and refuse to turn away. Mercer Freight didn't just clean up a site; we proved that a business can thrive by protecting people instead of exploiting them.”
The crowd erupted into loud applause as Sarah stepped back from the podium.
Daniel met her at the bottom of the steps, taking her hand into his.
Maya ran up, holding a brand-new plush bunny—this one with long, soft ears and a pink ribbon around its neck—that Daniel had bought her for her seventh birthday.
“Daniel! Mommy!” Maya shouted, pointing toward the street. “Can we go see the new house now? Sam says the playground is finished!”

Daniel scooped Maya up into his arms, setting her comfortably on his hip, while Sarah took Leo’s hand.
“Yes, sweetheart,” Daniel smiled, kissing Maya’s cheek. “Let's go home.”
