Chapter 5 - The Bail Hearing

The Cook County Criminal Courthouse was a grim, gray monolith that smelled of old floor wax and desperation. At 9:00 AM on Friday morning, Courtroom 302 was packed with reporters, union representatives from Blackwood Manufacturing, and a handful of curious onlookers who had been following the spectacular collapse of the Blackwood dynasty on the local news.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in a sharp, tailored black wool suit, my hair pulled back into a neat, professional bun. Maya Chen sat beside me, a stack of folders resting on her lap.

A side door opened, and Daniel Blackwood was led into the room by two armed court officers.

The transformation was shocking. The immaculate, arrogant prince of the Chicago suburbs was gone. He wore a standard, oversized orange jail jumpsuit, his wrists bound by chrome handcuffs that clinked against his waist chain. His hair was unwashed and messy, his face covered in a rough, dark stubble. He looked small, haggard, and profoundly humiliated.

When his eyes swept the gallery and locked onto me, a flash of pure, unadulterated venom crossed his face. He bared his teeth, leaning toward his expensive defense attorney, a high-priced criminal specialist named Marcus Vance.

The judge, a stern woman named Evelyn Torres, took her seat on the bench and adjusted her glasses. "Case number 26-CR-8942. State of Illinois versus Daniel Blackwood. Charges include aggravated corporate fraud, grand larceny, and embezzlement of a federally protected pension fund. We are here for a determination of bail."

Marcus Vance stood up, smoothing his tie. "Your Honor, my client is a lifelong resident of Cook County, a prominent businessman, and a noted philanthropist. He has no prior criminal record. The charges brought against him are the result of a highly contentious and vindictive divorce proceeding initiated by his estranged wife. We request a reasonable signature bond or a minimal cash bail that will allow him to assist in his own defense."

The assistant state’s attorney, a sharp young prosecutor named David Choi, rose to his feet. "The State strongly objects, Your Honor. Over the last twenty-four hours, new evidence has come to light that transforms this case from a white-collar financial dispute into a major capital crimes investigation."

Choi walked to the center of the room, holding up a certified copy of the documents we had found in the safe the previous night.

"The State has recovered documented proof that the defendant, along with his father, Harold Blackwood, engaged in a systemic, criminal conspiracy to medically incapacitate and ultimately cause the wrongful death of Clara Vance, the original investor in Blackwood Manufacturing," Choi announced, his voice reverberating through the silent courtroom. "We have already executed an arrest warrant for Dr. Julian Vance, who has fled the jurisdiction but was detained at O'Hare International Airport three hours ago. Dr. Vance has agreed to provide full state's evidence in exchange for a reduction in charges."

The courtroom erupted into a frenzy of whispers. Reporters began typing furiously on their tablets.

Daniel’s attorney turned to his client, his face completely pale. Daniel looked as if he had been struck by lightning; his mouth dropped open, his eyes fixed on the prosecutor as the world he had built completely vanished from under him.

"Furthermore," Prosecutor Choi continued, turning to look directly at Daniel. "The forensic analysis of the defendant’s private accounts indicates that over four million dollars of the stolen pension funds have already been converted into untraceable cryptocurrency assets. The defendant represents an extreme flight risk with access to massive illicit wealth."

Judge Torres looked down at Daniel from her elevated bench, her expression one of utter disgust. "In light of the new evidence presented by the State, and given the severity of the potential capital charges relating to the death of Clara Vance, this court finds that no financial conditions can reasonably assure the safety of the community or the appearance of the defendant."

She brought her gavel down with a thunderous crack. "Bail is denied. The defendant will remain remanded in custody at the Cook County Jail pending trial."

"Rachel!" Daniel screamed, his voice cracking with a high-pitched, manic desperation as the court officers grabbed his arms to lead him out. He struggled against his chains, his face twisted in a mask of pure terror. "Rachel, please! You can't do this! Talk to me! It was my father's idea! It was Harold! I didn't want to hurt Clara! Rachel!"

I didn't blink. I didn't look away. I watched him being dragged through the heavy metal door until his screams were cut off by the thick insulation.

Maya Chen touched my arm gently. "It's done, Rachel. He’s never coming out."

I stood up, pulling my black coat over my shoulders. As we walked out of the courtroom, a crowd of television cameras flashed in the hallway, the reporters shouting my name, begging for a statement. I ignored them all, keeping my head high as I walked down the limestone steps of the courthouse into the bright, clear morning light. The hunt was over, but the rebuilding of Blackwood Manufacturing had just begun.
