Chapter 2 - The Mask Shatters

"Mother?" Patricia Mitchell echoed, her voice squeaking into a register she had spent forty years training herself to avoid. "Ethan... what are you talking about? That woman is a vagrant!"

Ethan didn't look back at them. He was desperately trying to unbutton his tailored suit jacket, wrapping the heavy wool around my freezing shoulders. His hands were trembling so badly he could barely manage the buttons. "Mom, please, I didn't know you were coming today! Why are you dressed like this? Why didn't you let my drivers pick you up from the airport?!"

"Because if I arrived in a limousine with a police escort, Ethan," I said, my voice ice-cold and calm as I stood up slowly, taking his hand for balance, "I wouldn't have seen what happens when your future bride encounters someone she thinks has no power."

I stood tall, pulling his suit jacket around my soaked shawl. Even drenched, with silver hair plastered to my scalp and mud staining my secondhand skirt, my posture transformed instantly. The stoop in my back vanished. The feeble, trembling weakness I had projected moments ago evaporated, replaced by the commanding presence that had built a multi-billion-dollar global conglomerate from nothing.

Vanessa backed away a step, her face draining of all color. "No... no, this is a joke. Ethan, you said your mother was traveling in Europe! You said she was the chairwoman of Vance-Carter!"

"She IS the chairwoman of Vance-Carter!" Ethan roared, turning on Vanessa with a fury that made her flinch violently. "This is Eleanor Carter! The woman whose board of directors controls every single contract your father’s firm has been begging for! The woman whose foundation funded your entire university wing!"

George Mitchell dropped his whiskey glass. It hit the flagstones, shattering into a dozen sharp shards, but no one looked down.

"E-Eleanor Vance-Carter?" George stammered, taking three quick steps forward, his chest heaving under his tailored vest. "Ethan... surely there’s a misunderstanding! We didn't know! She arrived unannounced, dressed in... in rags! We thought she was a trespasser!"

"So if she were a homeless woman, George," I asked, taking a step toward him, my voice cutting through the humid afternoon air like a razor, "spraying her with ice-cold water, threatening her with arrest, and humiliating her in front of a crowd was acceptable behavior in your household?"

"I... well, no, but—"

"And you, Vanessa," I turned my gaze onto the young woman who had, five minutes ago, looked down at me like I was vermin under her heel.

Vanessa was trembling now. Her hands, still holding the brass hose nozzle, were shaking so hard the metal clinked against her diamond rings. "Mrs. Carter... I... I thought you were... I was just trying to protect the property! Ethan and I are getting married, and I wanted everything to be perfect—"

"You don't need to worry about the wedding being perfect, my dear," I said, offering her a sweet, terrifying smile. "Because there isn't going to be one."
