Chapter 9 - Rebuilding from Ashes

One year later.

The mountain sun was shining brightly over a beautiful four-acre property in the countryside just outside Asheville.

The old house where the attack had occurred was long gone—Ryan and I had sold it months ago, donating a portion of the proceeds to a local shelter for victims of domestic violence. In its place, we had built a warm, sprawling timber-frame home surrounded by green rolling hills, wildflower gardens, and tall pine trees.

On the spacious back porch, a large wooden table was set for a festive family celebration.

Ryan was standing at the outdoor grill, laughing as Marcus tried—and failed—to flip a steak without dropping it into the charcoal.

"You were a paramedic, Marcus! Where is your hand-eye coordination?!" Ryan teased, shaking his head.

"Medical precision doesn't apply to medium-rare ribeyes, Ryan!" Marcus laughed, grabbing a pair of tongs.

I sat in a comfortable rocking chair on the porch, nursing a glass of iced tea, watching the scene with a heart so full it felt like it might burst.

Running across the soft green grass of the lawn were Sophie and Lucas.

They were now nineteen months old—vibrant, energetic, healthy, and full of life. Sophie had Ryan’s bright blue eyes and dark curly hair, while Lucas possessed my stubborn chin and mischievous smile. They were chasing a golden retriever puppy named "Buddy" that Ryan had surprised them with for their first birthday.

Dr. Elena Rostova—who had become a close family friend after saving our lives in the operating room—stepped onto the porch carrying a plate of fresh fruit.

"Look at those two," Dr. Rostova smiled, leaning against the wooden railing beside my chair. "You’d never guess they entered this world under such terrifying circumstances."

"They're fighters," I whispered, watching Lucas fall soft-first into the grass, giggling uncontrollably as the puppy licked his face. "Just like their dad."

Ryan walked over, setting down a platter of food on the table. He came up behind my chair, resting his chin gently on top of my head, wrapping his warm arms around my shoulders.

"How are you feeling, mama?" Ryan asked softly in my ear.

"I'm perfect," I replied, covering his hands with mine.

"The trust fund reached its final legal restructuring today," Ryan informed me softly. "Mr. Harrison confirmed that all assets seized from Patricia's estate have been fully restored to the twins' account. It’s completely protected under a multi-signature federal trust."

"The money was never what mattered, Ryan," I said, turning my head to look into his eyes. "This... right here... this is what mattered."

He leaned down and kissed me gently on the lips—a kiss filled with years of shared grief, healing, unwavering devotion, and deep, unconditional love.
