Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail

The atmosphere in the grand living room of the Buckhead-style estate was suffocating. Daniel’s father, Arthur, who had been sitting quietly in a high-backed leather chair near the study doors due to his failing health, slowly pushed himself up using his polished mahogany cane. His face was stern, etched with deep lines of anger that weren't directed at me, but at his wife.

"Evelyn," Arthur said, his gravelly voice instantly commanding attention over the chaotic chatter of the room. "Go upstairs to the safe. Bring down the documents you are referring to. Now."

"Arthur, this is absurd, this is a scene—"

"Bring them down!" Arthur barked, slamming his cane against the floor.

Evelyn flinched, glanced at the dozens of relatives watching her with varying degrees of shock and suspicion, and turned on her heel. Her heels clicked loudly on the marble staircase as she fled toward the second floor.

I turned my attention back to my children. Noah, Ethan, Sophia, and Olivia were standing close together. Sophia was holding Ethan's sleeve, her wide blue eyes scanning the massive room with its fifteen-foot tree and elaborate decorations. They were not crying; I had spent eight years raising them to be resilient, grounded, and clear-eyed. But I could see the questions burning behind their eyes.

"Mom," Ethan whispered, pulling on my coat. "Why is that lady yelling at you?"

"She's scared, sweetie," I said quietly, kneeling down so I was at eye level with all four of them. "Because the truth is coming out today. You four stay right here with me. No matter what happens, you are safe."

"Is that man really our dad?" Olivia asked, pointing her small, gloved finger directly at Daniel, who was standing six feet away, looking like a man who had been struck by lightning.

I looked up at Daniel. His hands were shaking violently at his sides. He looked at the four small faces staring back at him—four sets of eyes that were unmistakably his family line, four children he had been told never existed.

"Yes, Olivia," I said softly, standing back up. "That is your father."

Daniel dropped to his knees right there on the rug, uncaring of his tailored pants or the audience surrounding him. Tears spilled over his lower lids, tracking down his pale cheeks. "Clara... my God... four? You were carrying four?"

"I tried to tell you, Daniel," I said, keeping my voice level, though my heart was hammering against my ribs. "When I went to the eight-week ultrasound, they found four heartbeats. I called your phone thirty times that day. You never answered. When I drove to your apartment, the locks were changed. Three days later, your lawyer served me with divorce papers stating that you believed I was unfaithful and that you refused to acknowledge paternity."

"I... I never gave those instructions to a lawyer!" Daniel stammered, grabbing his head with both hands. "My mother told me... she told me she saw you with another man! She brought me photos—photos of you at a hotel with some guy from your old university! She said you told her you didn't want the baby, that you were getting an abortion and moving to Europe!"

"And you believed her?" I asked, a bitter smile touching my lips. "After four years of marriage? You didn't even look me in the eye? You didn't come to our home to ask me directly?"

Daniel flinched as if I had struck him. "I came back to the apartment two days after I left! You were gone! The place was completely cleared out!"

"Because your mother had a team of movers show up with a notice of eviction signed by the building management—which your family owned!" I replied, step by step dismantling the wall of lies that had separated us for nearly a decade. "She gave me twelve hours to clear my personal belongings before she threatened to file a restraining order against me for trespassing on corporate property!"

The room was utterly silent now. The relatives were staring at Daniel and Arthur in horror.

Footsteps echoed from the staircase. Evelyn walked back down, her face pale, holding a thin manila folder in her hands. She didn't look at anyone as she approached Arthur, handing him the folder with trembling hands.

Arthur opened the folder, pulled out the bank statements and the signed 'Settlement Agreement,' and adjusted his reading glasses. He scanned the front page, then turned to the signature line at the bottom.

"Evelyn," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, dark register. "This signature for Clara... this was notarized by your personal secretary, legal firm, three days after Daniel left."

"Arthur, I did it for the family!" Evelyn cried out, her composure completely disintegrating into hysterical sobs. "She wasn't right for him! She came from nothing! She was going to drag Daniel down right when he was taking over the firm's expansion! I offered her money to leave, and when she refused, I... I handled it!"

"You handled it?!" Daniel screamed, rising from the floor like a madman. "You forged a legal agreement? You paid off a secretary to notarize fake papers? You told me my wife had an abortion and left the country?!"

"She would have ruined your life!" Evelyn shrieked.

"She was carrying my children!" Daniel yelled, pointing a trembling hand at Noah, Ethan, Sophia, and Olivia. "She was carrying FOUR of my children!"

The blonde woman, who had been listening to every word, slowly picked up her handbag from the couch. She looked at Daniel with a mixture of pity and utter disgust.

"I think your family gathering is over, Daniel," she said quietly. "Don't call me." She turned and walked briskly out the front door, slamming it behind her, leaving the diamond ring lying abandoned on the floor.
