Chapter 7 - The Cleansing of Floor Nine

By two o'clock that afternoon, the ninth floor of Crestwood Financial Group looked less like an accounting office and more like a federal crime scene.
Four agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, accompanied by three internal forensic auditors hand-picked by Julian Vance, had taken over Mark Reynolds’s corner office. Boxes of hard drives, paper files, and encrypted server towers were being wheeled out on heavy metal carts.
The fifty accountants on the floor sat at their cubicles in stunned silence, barely daring to breathe.
The private brass elevator opened.
Julian Vance stepped out, dressed impeccably in his dark suit jacket, looking every bit the commander of the building. Beside him walked Sophia Bennett. She had changed into a clean, elegant ivory silk blouse and black trousers provided by the executive wardrobe suite upstairs, her hair styled neatly, her eyes clear and calm.
Walking behind them was Ethan Cole.
Julian stopped in the center of the main floor aisle. He raised his hand, and the entire room went instantly silent.
"Effective immediately," Julian announced, his deep voice carrying clearly to every corner of the room, "Director Mark Reynolds and Senior Auditor Natalie Brooks have been permanently terminated from Crestwood Financial Group and placed under federal arrest for wire fraud, embezzlement, and corporate extortion."
A quiet murmur rippled through the cubicles.
"For the past two years," Julian continued, his eyes sweeping across the faces of the staff, "a culture of intimidation, dishonesty, and systemic abuse was allowed to fester on this floor. That culture ends today."
He turned, placing a firm, proud hand on Ethan Cole’s shoulder.
"Effective tomorrow morning, Ethan Cole is promoted to Interim Director of Corporate Audit," Julian declared. "His first task will be to conduct a full, transparent review of every employee evaluation written by Reynolds over the last twenty-four months."
Ethan stood frozen, his mouth slightly open behind his wire-frame glasses. "Mr... Mr. Vance? Me?"
"You stood by Ms. Bennett when no one else would," Julian said simply. "That shows integrity. Integrity is the only qualification that matters in this company from this day forward."
Julian then turned to face Sophia.
The entire floor watched as the CEO of a forty-billion-dollar corporation stepped back and offered a deep, respectful nod to the twenty-seven-year-old junior accountant.
"As for Ms. Sophia Bennett," Julian announced, turning to face the room, "she is being transferred immediately to the Executive Financial Intelligence Division on the twenty-eighth floor, reporting directly to the Board of Directors as Lead Special Auditor."
Sophia looked at the faces of her former coworkers—the people who had ignored her, the people who had watched her suffer, now staring at her in absolute awe and disbelief.
She didn't gloat. She didn't smirk. She simply held her head high, offering Ethan a warm, grateful smile.

"Thank you, Mr. Vance," Sophia said clearly.
"No, Ms. Bennett," Julian replied, his eyes shining with quiet, hidden pride. "Thank you for reminding this company what truth looks like."
