Chapter 10 - The Harvest of Grace

Two years later.

The large brick house by the park was filled with noise, laughter, and the mouth-watering aroma of roasted turkey and fresh pumpkin pie.

It was Thanksgiving evening.

Sitting around the long wooden dining table were Sarah Lin, Marcus Vance—who had driven down from Chicago—Nurse Denise Holloway from Barnes Memorial, and several neighbors from the block.

At the head of the table sat Ethan.

Beside him sat nine-year-old Lily, who was currently helping three-year-old Emma use a small spoon to eat her mashed potatoes.

The room was bright, warm, and filled with the comfortable chatter of people who had built a real family out of broken pieces.

Marcus raised his glass of sparkling cider. "A toast," Marcus announced, looking at Ethan with deep respect and admiration. "To the man who walked away from a billion dollars to find something priceless."

"To Ethan!" the table cheered, clinking their glasses together.

Ethan smiled, holding his glass, looking around the table at the faces of the people he loved.

After dinner, as the guests gathered in the living room around a roaring fireplace, Ethan walked out onto the front porch.

The cool November air was crisp and clear. Millions of bright stars sparkled in the dark night sky above the treetops of Forest Park.

The front screen door opened softly.

Lily stepped out onto the porch, wearing a warm knitted sweater, holding two mugs of hot chocolate topped with marshmallows.

She walked over and handed one mug to Ethan.

"Thanks, Lily," Ethan said, taking the warm mug.

They stood side by side on the porch steps, watching the steam rise from their mugs into the cool night air, listening to the soft sound of laughter coming from inside the house.

"Are you happy, Ethan?" Lily asked quietly, looking up at the stars.

Ethan looked down at the little girl who had walked into his life barefoot during a rainstorm—the girl who had given him back his soul, his purpose, and his family.

He reached down, wrapped his long arm around her shoulders, and pulled her close against his side.

"I am the happiest man in the world, Lily," Ethan whispered softly, kissing the top of her head under the starlight. "Forever and always."

Lily leaned her head against his side, taking a warm sip of her hot chocolate as the quiet peace of the night wrapped around them like a warm blanket.
