Chapter 9 - The Sunflower Foundation

One year later.
The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan was decorated in thousands of radiant, golden sunflowers.
Over five hundred guests—business leaders, city officials, community organizers, and news reporters—filled the room for the inaugural gala of the Gabriel & Valentina Sunflower Foundation.
The foundation, funded with a fifty-million-dollar endowment from Vance Global, was designed with a single, radical purpose: to provide direct, unconditional food security, emergency housing, and educational scholarships for homeless children across New York City. No bureaucratic red tape, no institutional hurdles—just direct, immediate care for children who were invisible to the world.
My mother, Eleanor, dressed in an elegant navy gown, sat at the head table alongside my father, who was standing short distances with a cane, looking healthier and happier than he had in a decade.
I stood backstage, wearing a simple, elegant emerald-green silk dress, my dark hair falling in soft waves over my shoulders.
Gabriel walked up behind me, stepping into the dim light of the wings. He wore an immaculate black tuxedo, looking so breathtakingly handsome it still made my heart skip a beat every single time I looked at him.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.
"Nervous?" he whispered into my ear, wrapping his arm around my waist.
"A little," I smiled, turning in his arms to look up at him. "There are five hundred people out there waiting for us to speak."
"Let them wait," Gabriel murmured, opening the velvet box.
Inside rested a stunning engagement ring—a flawless yellow diamond cut in the shape of a sunflower, surrounded by a band of polished platinum.
I gasped, covering my mouth with my hand.
Gabriel took the ring, looking into my eyes with a love so deep, so absolute, that the noise of the crowded ballroom completely vanished.
"Fourteen years ago, Valentina," Gabriel said softly, his voice trembling with emotion, "I stood outside an iron gate with nothing in my pockets except hunger and despair. You handed me half a sandwich, and you looked at me like I mattered. You gave me a future."
He took my left hand, slipping the ring onto my finger.
"I spent fourteen years building an empire so I could stand in front of you today—not as a homeless boy, not as a billionaire CEO, but as a man who wants to spend every single day of his life making sure you never feel alone again."
Tears of pure, unadulterated joy spilled over my lashes.

"Yes," I whispered, throwing my arms around his neck. "Yes, Gabriel! A thousand times, yes!"
He pulled me close, lifting me slightly off my feet, kissing me with a passion that made the whole world tilt on its axis.
