Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail

For the next seventy-two hours, the Prairie Rose Diner became the unofficial headquarters of the resistance.

I turned over the management duties of the diner to my assistant cook, locked myself in the back office, and covered the walls with legal pads, tax records, and land registry documents. Sarah, who turned out to have an incredible eye for detail from her years working as a billing clerk before Marcus ruined her life, sat beside me pouring through stacks of public property records we printed from the county courthouse.

Knox was being held without bail in the Sedgwick County Detention Center. The prosecutor—clearly in the pocket of Vance Development—had added a "habitual offender" enhancement to his charges due to his thirty-year-old felony record, effectively ensuring he couldn't get out before trial.

On Wednesday night, twelve hours before Knox’s preliminary hearing, we hit the jackpot.

"Megan! Look at this!" Sarah called out, waving a printed PDF file under the fluorescent desk lamp.

I leaned over her shoulder. "What did you find?"

"Midwest Infrastructure Assets—the shell company buying up the trailer park—isn't just registered in Delaware," Sarah explained, pointing her finger at a series of signature lines at the bottom of a deed transfer. "Look at the secondary managing director. Marcus Miller."

I gasped. "Marcus isn't an outside enforcer. He’s listed as a corporate officer!"

"It gets worse," Sarah continued, turning the page. "Marcus signed a secret land conversion option six months ago. But to execute the conversion and sell the trailer park to the state for three million dollars, the company had to certify that all residential leases were terminated voluntarily without ongoing domestic disputes or tenant litigation. If a tenant files an active domestic violence report or an illegal eviction lawsuit before the state closing date... the whole contract becomes void!"

The entire evil scheme laid open before us. Marcus hadn't just been abusing Sarah out of drunk rage; he was deliberately trying to terrorize her into abandoning her legal lease without filing a formal complaint! When Knox stepped in and removed Sarah and Sophie safely from the property, he didn't just stop the abuse—he kept Sarah’s legal tenancy alive, completely blocking Vance Development’s three-million-dollar deal!

"They needed Knox in prison so they could force Sarah to sign a retroactive lease surrender form!" I yelled, slamming my hand on the desk. "If Knox is locked up, Sarah is defenseless, and they win!"

"Not quite," a deep voice sounded from the office doorway.

We turned around. Standing in the doorway was an elderly man in a flawless pinstripe suit, holding a silver-headed walking cane and an expensive leather briefcase. He had snowy white hair, sharp blue eyes, and an air of immense authority that commanded instant respect.

"Who are you?" I asked, startled.

The old man stepped into the room, taking off his fedora hat. "My name is Arthur Vance," he said softly, his voice rich and commanding. "And the man trying to ruin your friend Knox... is my estranged nephew, Richard."
