Chapter 2 - The Audit Begins

By eight o'clock the following morning, the administrative wing of Brightwater Elementary resembled an active investigation site.

While students sat in bright classrooms working through their morning spelling lists, three forensic accountants sent directly from Jacob Reed’s corporate firm sat in the main conference room. Stacked around them were banker boxes filled with physical ledger sheets, scholarship applications, and archived email printouts dating back nearly a decade.

In the hallway outside, panic had gripped the school’s top administration. Ms. Pratt, the front office administrator who had handed seven-year-old Emma the red-stamped tuition hold, paced nervously outside the principal's locked door.

Inside her office, Principal Laura Vance sat across from Jacob, Elena Ruiz, and Sarah.

"Mr. Reed, please understand," Principal Vance said, her hands tightly folded over her blotter. "I was not fully aware of the extent to which Mrs. Kingsley was dictating scholarship allocations. The donor committee operates with a degree of autonomy granted by the board of trustees—"

"You signed the administrative holds, Principal Vance," Jacob interrupted gently, setting a steaming ceramic mug of coffee on her desk. "When a red notice was printed for Emma Carter, it bore your digital signature alongside Ms. Pratt’s initials. You knew the Pendelton scholarship sat vacant while a child was turned away at the iron gate."

Principal Vance flushed deep red. "Mrs. Kingsley assured us that the Carter family’s paperwork was incomplete and that they were preparing to transfer out of the district voluntarily!"

"Because Mara threatened to call Child Protective Services on me," Sarah said firmly, sitting straight in her chair. "She told me on the front steps of this school that my housing instability would be reported if I pressed the issue."

Principal Vance swallowed hard, looking genuinely appalled. "She... she said that to you?"

"She did," Elena Ruiz confirmed, pulling a recorded voice-memo transcript from her folder. "And she said it in front of Emma. I filed an official counselor’s incident report that afternoon, Principal Vance. You received a copy in your inbox at 4:15 PM on Tuesday. You didn't reply."

The principal closed her eyes, bowing her head. The silence in the room was suffocating.

At that moment, the conference room door across the hall swung open. Arthur Vance—Jacob’s lead forensic accountant—walked into the principal's office holding a blue folder.

"Jacob," Arthur said, ignoring the tense atmosphere. "We’ve found the anomaly."

Jacob stood up. "Go ahead, Arthur."

Arthur opened the folder and placed three financial statements on the desk in front of Principal Vance. "The Pendelton Hardship Endowment generates roughly forty-two thousand dollars in annual interest income intended strictly for tuition assistance. Over the last four years, zero dollars were disbursed to qualified applicants facing temporary hardship."

Principal Vance frowned. "Where did the interest go? The main general fund?"

"No," Arthur replied coldly. "It was rerouted through a subsidiary line item labeled 'Special Events and Facilities Upkeep.' That line item paid directly for the annual Spring Gala floral arrangements, catering upgrades, and private valet services—contracts that were awarded exclusively to Kingsley Hospitality Group, a firm owned by Mara Kingsley’s brother."

Sarah gasped quietly, covering her mouth with her hand.

Jacob looked down at Principal Vance. "That isn't just administrative bias, Principal. That is self-dealing and embezzlement of charitable trust funds."

Principal Vance looked as though she might faint. She looked at the paper, then up at Jacob’s unyielding face. "My God... I had no idea she was funneling the funds into her family's business."

"Ignorance is not a defense when you're managing a school that educates seven-year-olds," Jacob said. "An emergency board meeting has been called for Thursday night. I suggest you decide by then whether you are going to testify as a witness for the audit—or sit alongside Mara Kingsley as a co-defendant."
