CHAPTER 5 — The Memory the General Woke Up With

Back in Room 912, General Calloway’s hand moved.

It was small.

Almost imperceptible.

But Petra saw it.

“His fingers—”

Nora was already inside the room again.

Because whatever was happening outside the ICU didn’t matter compared to the fact that a man was waking up inside a controlled pharmacologic state.

The monitor steadied for half a second.

Then dipped again.

Nora stepped closer.

And whispered, “Come on.”

Petra stared. “You’re talking to him?”

“No,” Nora said softly. “I’m reminding him.”

Dr. Price appeared at the doorway again. “You need to leave—”

But he stopped mid-sentence.

Because General Calloway’s eyes opened.

Not fully.

Not calmly.

But recognizing.

The room went silent in a way hospitals rarely experience.

Because consciousness changes authority faster than policy ever can.

His gaze moved slowly.

Fell on Nora.

And stopped.

A long silence.

Then—

With effort that clearly hurt him, he raised his hand.

Not weakly.

Not uncertain.

He saluted.

The entire ICU froze.

Even the monitors seemed to hesitate for half a second.

Dr. Price went pale.

One of the federal agents whispered, “That’s not in the report…”

Nora didn’t move.

She didn’t return it.

Because her hands were already on the monitor controls.

Adjusting.

Correcting.

Saving.

And the general—still barely conscious—did something even more unexpected.

He spoke.

One word.

May you like

“Nora.”

That was when everything changed.
