Chapter 10 - The Promise in the Garden

Six months later.
The summer sun shone bright and warm over the rolling green lawns of the estate in Riverwoods.
The scars of the siege had been completely erased. The mansion had been restored, but it no longer felt like a cold, empty stone fortress.
The heavy velvet curtains had been replaced with bright, sheer white silk that let in the warm breeze. Fresh flowers—white lilies and red roses—filled the vases in the grand foyer, and the sound of soft piano music drifted from the open French doors of the sunroom.
In the private garden behind the house, six-month-old Nico sat on a soft fleece blanket on the green grass, giggling happily as he reached his chubby hands toward a golden retriever puppy playing beside him.
He was healthy, heavy, and thriving, his cardiac arrhythmia completely managed under proper care.
Sophie sat on a wooden garden bench, wearing a light summer dress, reading a pediatric medicine textbook.
With Dominic’s full financial backing, she had reinstated her nursing license and was currently finishing her Master’s degree in Pediatric Cardiac Research at the University of Chicago.
A shadow fell softly over her book.
Dominic stepped up beside the bench, holding two glasses of fresh iced tea. He wore a simple white linen shirt and dark trousers, looking younger, relaxed, and remarkably peaceful. The syndicate had been completely stabilized under his undisputed rule, with all threat factions neutralized.
He handed her a glass and sat down beside her on the bench, sliding his arm comfortably around her waist.
“How’s the studying, Chief?” Dominic smiled, his dark eyes soft as he looked at her.
“It’s going well,” Sophie smiled back, resting her head against his shoulder. “Dr. Sterling’s medical license was officially revoked by the state board this morning.”
“Good,” Dominic said, his jaw tightening slightly before he relaxed again. “He got off easy.”
They sat in comfortable silence for a long moment, watching Nico roll over on the grass, letting out a bright, bell-like laugh that filled the warm afternoon air.
Dominic reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box.
Sophie turned her head, looking at the box, her heart skipping a beat.
Dominic opened the lid. Inside sat a breathtaking ring—a brilliant, tear-shaped diamond set in a platinum band carved with small, delicate olive branches.
“Dominic...” Sophie breathed softly.
Dominic took her hand, his calloused fingers wrapping gently around hers.
“Six months ago, a waitress walked into the most dangerous corner of Chicago because she heard a baby crying,” Dominic said, his voice deep, gravelly, and rich with a profound, unshakeable emotion. “You didn't just save my son’s life, Sophie. You brought light back into a house that was drowning in darkness. You gave me a reason to be a father, and you gave Nico a mother.”
He looked into her eyes with pure, unreserved devotion.
“I love you, Sophie Lane. Will you marry me and make this family whole?”
Tears of pure, beautiful joy filled Sophie’s eyes. She didn't hesitate for a single second. She threw her arms around his neck, pulling him into a deep, passionate kiss.
“Yes,” Sophie whispered against his lips. “Yes, Dominic. Absolutely yes.”
From the blanket on the grass, little Nico let out a happy, babbling squeal, clapping his tiny hands together as the puppy licked his cheek.
Dominic laughed, pulling Sophie close against his side as they watched their son play in the bright, beautiful sunshine.
