Chapter 7 - The Shadow of the Past

Life was settling into a rhythm, but a shadow remained. Claire still had days—nights, mostly—where the pain in her legs flared, a phantom memory of the accident that had changed everything.

One evening, after a long board prep session, she found Mason in the server room, working on a custom project. It was a prototype—a lightweight, neural-linked support frame.

"It’s not finished," Mason said, looking up from the console. "But the sensor array is much faster than the old medical models."

Claire stared at it. It was beautiful, stripped of the bulky, industrial aesthetic of standard prosthetics. It was elegant, meant to be part of the person, not just a cage around them.

"Mason," she whispered. "Why are you building this?"

"Because you founded this company to change the world, Claire," he said, walking over to her chair. "I think it’s time we changed your world, too."

The air in the room grew heavy. Claire hadn't truly believed in a future where she could stand for a long time. She had made peace with the chair, but the sight of the frame stirred something ancient in her—a hope she had buried deep.

"I don't want pity," she said.

"This isn't about pity," Mason replied, his voice gentle. "This is about potential. You’ve been sitting in the driver’s seat for four years. Maybe it’s time you stood up and walked the road yourself."

That night, Claire didn't go home. She stayed in the server room, working with Mason, the two of them pushing the boundaries of what was possible, blurring the line between machine and human.
