Chapter 5 - The Smell of Aniline

Inside the emergency vault, the heavy concrete walls muffled the apocalyptic battle raging on the upper floors of the estate.
Hours seemed to stretch into eternity. The vault was fully equipped with independent air filtration, emergency medical supplies, and monitors displaying the estate’s security feed.
Claire stood fixed in front of the monitors, her heart bleeding with anxiety. She watched camera after camera go dark as Volkov’s mercenaries destroyed the feeds. But through the surviving angles, she saw Dominic moving through the grand foyer like a force of nature. Supported by Marko and his loyal elite, Dominic pushed the invaders back step by step, his tactical brilliance choking off every tactical advantage the mercenaries attempted to use.
By 4:00 AM, the gunfire finally ceased.
The monitors showed the main courtyard littered with defeated mercenaries. The surviving attackers were being rounded up and disarmed by Moretti guards.
"It's over," Sophia whispered, letting out a massive breath of relief as she rocked baby Leonardo. "Dominic did it. He held the house."
Claire collapsed into a chair, shaking violently as the overwhelming stress released its grip on her. She looked at the monitor showing the main hall. Dominic was standing near the grand staircase, his suit jacket torn, blood smeared on his cheek, but he was alive. He was barked orders to his men, cleaning up the aftermath.
The vault door hummed and slowly slid open.
Dominic stepped inside. His eyes immediately searched the room, bypassing his sister and guards, landing straight on Claire.
Without a word, Claire stood up and threw herself into his arms. Dominic caught her, burying his face in the crook of her neck, lifting her slightly off her feet as he held her tightly against his heart.
"I told you I’d come back," Dominic whispered into her hair, his voice rough with fatigue.
"Don't ever do that to me again," Claire sobbed quietly, squeezing his broad shoulders.
Dominic pulled back slightly, his hand gently wiping a stray tear from her cheek. "I make no promises about my life, Claire. But I promise I will always come back to you."
Sophia smiled warmly from the cot, holding up the sleeping baby. "Is the estate secure, brother?"
"The house is clean," Dominic reported, his expression turning serious. "Volkov sent his best men, but they failed. We captured his second-in-command alive in the courtyard."
Dominic turned back to Claire, his tone shifting back to business. "Dr. Vance is coming down to check on Leonardo and Sophia. You should get some rest, Claire. You’ve been awake for over twenty hours."
"I'm fine," Claire said, wiping her eyes. "I want to inspect Leonardo’s central line one last time before I sleep. With the power grid switching to emergency generators during the assault, I want to ensure the fluid warmer didn't fluctuate in temperature."
Claire walked over to the portable medical cart that had been brought into the vault during the panic. She picked up the spare IV tubing bags that had been stocked in the vault's private medical kit.
She held one bag up to the light.
Suddenly, Claire froze.
The air in her lungs trapped itself in her throat.
She held the IV bag closer to her nose, taking a tiny whiff of the rubber port.
Sweet. Chemical. Almonds.
It was subtle, almost imperceptible to an untrained nose, but Claire knew that smell. She had smelled it in Suite 404 at the hospital.
It was the distinct, synthetic odor of aniline leaching into heated saline.
Claire quickly turned the plastic bag around, peeling back the medical inspection sticker on the side. Beneath it was the exact same dark, crooked lot number she had pulled off the line in the hospital.
Lot 44-B-Recalled.
"Claire?" Dominic noticed her sudden rigidity. "What's wrong?"
Claire turned around, her face completely drained of color. Her eyes darted around the vault, looking at the pristine steel walls, the sealed air vents, and the medical supplies that had been stocked inside the secure room days before the attack.
"The poison..." Claire whispered, her voice trembling with horror. "It isn't just coming from the outside, Dominic."
Dominic stepped toward her, his eyes narrowing sharply. "What are you talking about?"
"This IV bag was stocked in this private vault three days ago," Claire said, holding up the clear bag with a shaking hand. "Before the attack. Before Volkov’s men even reached the gates. The recalled aniline-based tubing... it was placed here. Inside your ultimate safe room."
Dominic’s face turned into a terrifying mask of thunder. "That's impossible. Only five people have security access to stock this vault."
"Then one of those five people is trying to kill your family," Claire said.

Before Dominic could respond, the heavy steel door of the vault slammed shut with a deafening CLANG.
The electronic keypad on the inside went dark, and the soft hum of the oxygen filtration system suddenly reversed, emitting a low, ominous hiss as a sweet-smelling, invisible gas began pouring through the vents.
