Chapter 4 - The Counter-Strike

The following morning, the news of the impending annulment leaked to the press, setting off a secondary wave of panic within the Thompson clan.
Katherine Thompson, unwilling to accept total defeat, gathered the senior members of her family at her estate in Lake Forest. The grand mansion, built in the 1920s with limestone pillars and sweeping manicured lawns, had long been the crown jewel of the Thompson name. But behind the hand-carved mahogany doors, the atmosphere was one of total desperation.
"She thinks she can discard us like trash?" Katherine snarled, pacing across the Oriental rug in her drawing room. She held a glass of gin, though it was barely nine in the morning. "We are the Thompsons! My grandfather built the first rail lines out of this city! We have connections in the governor’s office! We have board members at every bank in Illinois!"
"We had board members, Katherine," her brother Richard said from the armchair, his tone dead and hollow. "Two of them resigned this morning after Vance Capital requested an emergency review of our outstanding commercial loans. The bank isn't extending our line of credit. They’re calling in the twelve-million-dollar balloon payment due at the end of the month."
"Then we sue her!" Katherine demanded, her eyes wide and bloodshot. "We sue Emma Vance for emotional distress! We sue her for bad-faith entry into a marriage contract! We claim she married Brad under false pretenses to sabotage our commercial ventures!"
"Do you really want to go to discovery against the Vance legal team?" Richard asked, looking up at her with cold eyes. "Do you want their forensic accountants digging through the ledgers from 2021? The ones where you shifted trust assets into offshore accounts to avoid the estate tax?"
Katherine froze mid-stride. Her hand tightened around her glass until her knuckles turned white.
"She wouldn't know about that," Katherine whispered.
"Her head auditor is Harrison Vance," Richard revealed quietly. "He spent twenty years working for the IRS before Frank Vance hired him. If they push for full financial disclosure during a contested divorce, every single irregular transaction you’ve authorized over the last decade will be laid out on a judge’s desk."
At that moment, the drawing room door swung open.
Brad walked in. He looked completely shattered. He was wearing the same clothes from the day before, his suit crumpled, his eyes rimmed with red. In his right hand, he held the annulment papers.
"Brad," Katherine said, stepping toward him. "Did you talk to her? Did you make her see reason?"
Brad looked at his mother, his expression a terrifying mix of grief and sudden, blinding clarity.
"I signed them," he said softly.
Katherine gasped. "You what?!"
"I signed the annulment papers," Brad repeated, his voice rising as he stared at her. "I gave them to her lawyer an hour ago."
"You coward!" Katherine screamed, dropping her glass onto the rug, where it shattered into dozens of glittering shards. "You gave up everything! Our leverage! Our standing! You let that girl ruin us!"
"She didn't ruin us, Mom!" Brad roared, stepping directly over the broken glass, his face inches from his mother’s. "You did! You couldn't just let me be happy! You had to power-trip! You had to walk into our home and hand her a lease like she was some servant you could command! You wanted to humiliate her! You wanted to show her who was boss!"
"I was protecting this family!" Katherine screamed back.
"You were protecting your own ego!" Brad yelled, tears spilling over his cheeks. "And now we have nothing! I lost my wife! I lost my home! And in thirty days, we’re going to lose this house!"
"Enough!" Richard shouted, standing up from his chair. "Both of you, shut up!"
He pulled his phone from his coat pocket and looked at the screen. A new email notification had just arrived from the clerk of the Cook County Chancery Division.
"It’s over," Richard said quietly, his voice devoid of all emotion. "The annulment has been granted under emergency seal. Emma Vance is no longer associated with this family."
He paused, reading the second attachment on the screen.
"And Vance Capital has just purchased the master deed to this estate from the primary mortgage holder."

Katherine collapsed onto the sofa, staring at her brother in disbelieving horror. "What... what does that mean?"
Richard looked down at her with bitter finality. "It means, Katherine... you have thirty days to pack your Hermès bags."
