Chapter 2 - The Sterility of the Royal House

The luxury prenatal pavilion of St. Jude’s Private Hospital smelled of white lilies, expensive leather cleaner, and the quiet, high-voltage ozone of advanced medical machinery.

Adrian Castillo adjusted the cuffs of his bespoke suit jacket, his chest expanding as he walked down the carpeted corridor. Behind him, his mother, Margaret, marched with the regal, slow-cadence stride of a matriarch who had finally reclaimed her territory, her pearls clicking softly against her silk blouse. Vanessa followed, her fingers flying across her phone as she drafted a mass text message to the high-society circles of the city.

“It’s official. The ink is dry. The dead weight is gone, and the true Castillo lineage begins at 2:00 PM today.”

Inside VIP Room 4, Chloe lay back on a heated leather examination table, her hand resting over her small, silk-covered abdomen. She smiled the moment the door swung open, her lip gloss glittering under the soft recessed lighting.

"Adrian," she purred, stretching out her manicured hand. "Did she sign it? Is it over?"

"She signed it, my love," Adrian said, stepping forward to press a kiss to her forehead. He took her hand, his thumb rubbing against the four-carat diamond ring he had bought her using the equity line from the Salazar-Castillo family estate—the line he had told Elena was frozen due to a market downturn. "Elena took the kids and ran. She’s currently sitting at a commercial airport terminal trying to figure out how to pay for a flight to Spain. She’s history. From this second on, everything we do is for the boy."

Margaret stepped up to the side of the bed, her sharp, heavily made-up eyes softening as she looked at Chloe's stomach. "The family name needed this resurrection, Chloe. A true Castillo son. Not like those... quiet, difficult children Elena kept hidden away in the suburbs. A boy who looks like his father. A boy who will take the firm into the next generation."

"Dr. Reynolds is just pulling up the high-resolution files from the laboratory," Chloe said, her voice dropping into a sweet, practiced modulation. "The genetic screening results came back with the gender confirmation. We’re just waiting for the official printout for the baby book."

The heavy oak door opened, and Dr. Arthur Reynolds walked in. He was a man of sixty, his white hair cropped close, his eyes carrying the heavy, clinical distance of a chief medical officer who had delivered three generations of the city’s elite. He wasn't carrying a standard tablet. He was holding a thick, grey cardstock folder, and his face lacked the bright, professional customer-service smile that Adrian’s five-thousand-dollar deposit usually guaranteed.

"Mr. Castillo. Mrs. Castillo," Dr. Reynolds said, acknowledging Adrian and Margaret with a brief nod. He didn't look at Chloe. He walked straight to the electronic terminal by the wall, sliding the folder onto the desk.

"Well, Doctor?" Adrian laughed, his voice boomed with the easy arrogance of a man who had just won a war. "Let’s see the ultrasound. Let’s look at the heir. I want to see the profile. Does he have the Castillo jawline already?"

Dr. Reynolds didn't turn on the display screen. He adjusted his glasses, opened the grey folder, and looked flatly at Adrian. "Mr. Castillo, before we proceed to the live imaging session with Miss Vance, we need to review the comprehensive baseline genetic profile and the secondary diagnostic data that was compiled during your mandatory reproductive compatibility screening three weeks ago."

"We don't need a lecture on biology, Arthur," Margaret chuckled, waving her hand dismissively. "We just want to know the metrics. Is the boy healthy? Is his development on track?"

"The fetus is developing within normal parameters for fourteen weeks," Dr. Reynolds said, his voice dropping into a flat, level frequency that cut through the warm atmosphere of the room like a cold blade. "However, the primary concern of this clinic is the secondary diagnostic verification. Mr. Castillo, I have the results of your micro-deletion and automated sperm-count assay from the male fertility archive."

Adrian frowned, his hand slipping away from Chloe’s fingers. "What assay? That was just a routine baseline sample your nurses took for the insurance clearance. There’s nothing wrong with me. I’ve already fathered two children."

"No, Mr. Castillo," Dr. Reynolds said, his voice utterly devoid of hesitation. "You haven't."

The room fell into an absolute, suffocating silence. The high-pitched hum of the ultrasound machine seemed to amplify, filling the corners of the VIP suite with a thin, mechanical vibration.

"What did you just say?" Adrian whispered, his jaw tightening, his head tilting forward.

"According to the definitive cellular analysis, which we ran three times across two separate laboratories to eliminate any risk of technical variance," Dr. Reynolds explained, lifting a black-and-white laboratory chart from the folder and holding it flat against the desk, "you present with an absolute, congenital condition known as bilateral micro-deletion of the AZF region on the Y-chromosome. To put it in non-clinical terms, Mr. Castillo, you have been completely, irreversibly sterile since birth. You do not possess the biological capacity to produce mature spermatozoa."

Vanessa stopped typing. Her phone slipped through her fingers, hitting the thick plush carpet with a dull thud.

Margaret’s face didn't turn red; it turned a terrifying, translucent shade of white, the pearls at her throat suddenly looking like heavy stone weights. "Arthur... that is a lie. That is a medical error. He has a son. Noah is nine years old! Lily is seven! He has spent a decade being a father!"

"I am not speaking about legal custody or social history, Mrs. Castillo," Dr. Reynolds said, his eyes fixed steadily on Adrian’s fracturing face. "I am speaking about genomic reality. The man standing before me cannot father a biological child. He could not have fathered the two children he raised with his ex-wife, and he most certainly could not have fathered the fetus currently carried by the young woman on this table."

Adrian didn't look at his mother. He didn't look at the doctor.

Slowly, mechanically, his neck turned until his bloodshot eyes were locked entirely onto Chloe.

Chloe was no longer smiling. Her back had slammed against the leather headrest, her face completely drained of color, her fingers clawing at the silk sheet with a violent, erratic tremor. Her mouth was open, but the only sound coming out of her throat was a small, dry rattle.

May you like

"Adrian..." she choked out, her voice cracked, her eyes darting wildly toward the door. "Adrian, it's a mistake... the labs... the labs mixed up the samples... I swear to you, it's yours... it’s a Castillo..."

"Who is he?" Adrian whispered. The voice didn't sound like him. It sounded like a hollow, broken pipe through which cold air was rushing. He stepped toward the bed, his hands clenching into fists so tight that the fabric of his sleeves strained. "Who the hell is the father, Chloe?"
