Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

At two o’clock on Wednesday afternoon, an emergency press conference was called in the lobby of Grant & Cole Outdoor Headquarters.

Reporters from local television stations, business journalists, and community leaders filled the space, their cameras pointed toward a mahogany podium set up in front of the brick wall.

Richard Cole sat in the front row of the executive audience, a confident, arrogant smirk on his face. He believed Lucas was about to announce his resignation to spare the company from the municipal scandal.

Lucas stepped up to the podium. He wore no jacket, just a crisp white shirt with rolled-up sleeves. Beside him stood Rachel Harper and Mrs. Okafor.

“Thank you all for coming,” Lucas began, his voice echoing clearly through the high-ceilinged lobby. “Over the past week, questions have been raised regarding Grant & Cole’s community investment at Lincoln Elementary.”

Richard leaned back in his chair, folding his arms triumphantly.

“Some have claimed,” Lucas continued, “that taking personal responsibility for a struggling child’s dignity constitutes a conflict of interest. They have used bureaucratic loopholes to freeze funding for hundreds of young readers in our city.”

Lucas paused, looking directly at Richard in the front row.

“Today, I am announcing two major developments,” Lucas said calmly. “First, following an investigation by the Oregon Government Ethics Commission, the administrative hold on Lincoln Elementary’s grant has been permanently dismissed due to severe ethics violations by a municipal official.”

Richard’s smirk instantly vanished. He sat bolt upright in his chair, his eyes wide with shock.

“Second,” Lucas declared, his voice rising with powerful authority, “I am personally establishing the Harper Family Foundation for Educational Dignity with an initial personal endowment of five million dollars.”

The room erupted in gasps and murmurs from the press. Cameras flashed rapidly.

“This foundation,” Lucas explained, “will provide direct, unbureaucratic support to low-income families in Portland—providing waterproof winter clothing, nutritional support, and emergency housing relief without shame, without publicity, and without fine print.”

He turned to look at Rachel, reaching out his hand to invite her to the podium.

“And I am proud to announce,” Lucas added, “that Rachel Harper—who will be completing her degree at Portland Community College—has agreed to serve as the foundation’s founding Executive Director.”

The room erupted into thunderous applause. Reporters rushed forward, shouting questions and snapping photos.

Richard Cole sat frozen in his chair, completely isolated and utterly defeated. Beside him, Marcus Vance leaned over and whispered softly in his ear:

“The board called a special meeting for five o’clock, Richard. We have the votes to buy out your stock at market value. You’re done here.”

Richard stared at Lucas and Rachel standing together at the podium, surrounded by light, applause, and community love. He quietly stood up and slunk out the back door into the rain, erased forever from the company his father had co-founded.
