Chapter 10 - THE EVERLASTING HOME

One year later.
It was a crisp, golden afternoon in October.
The annual Harper-Costello Autumn Festival was taking place on the grounds of the estate. Hundreds of families from across Chicago were gathered on the lawns, enjoying food stalls, live acoustic music, pumpkin carving, and children's games.
In the center of the garden, near the privet hedge where Maya had first stepped onto the property three years ago, a beautiful new stone archway had been constructed.
Above the archway was a hand-carved wooden plaque that read:
THE GAP IN THE HEDGE“Where the heart finds its way home.”
Luca stood beside the archway, wearing a tailored dark suit, holding Elena’s hand.
On her finger sparkled a simple, exquisite diamond band—a symbol of their wedding, which had been celebrated in the garden six months earlier surrounded by their true family.
Beside them stood ten-year-old Maya, dressed in a pretty blue dress, holding her newborn baby brother, Leo Jr., in her arms with fierce, proud sisterly protection.
Tommy, now eleven and the star pitcher of his middle school team, stood beside them, holding a bag of hot popcorn.
Frank stepped up to Luca, holding a camera. "Alright, everyone! Family picture time! Gather in near the arch!"
Luca wrapped his left arm securely around Elena’s waist, pulled Maya and Tommy close to his right side, and looked into the camera lens.
He stood tall, strong, and unyielding on his own two feet—no longer a prince in a wheelchair, no longer a crime boss in the shadows, but a father, a husband, and a man who had built a haven of love, truth, and lasting peace.
"Say cheese!" Frank called out.
"CHEESE!" everyone shouted together.
