Chapter 7 - The Bidding War Explosion

The Grand Ballroom of the New York Department of Transportation was packed to capacity on Tuesday morning. Over two hundred journalists, state officials, and corporate executives sat in the velvet chairs, watching the massive electronic screens that displayed the active bids for the seventy-million-dollar Manhattan reinforcement contract.

Dr. Arthur Sterling sat at the front VIP table, surrounded by his legal team and the state transit commissioners, his expression serene and untouchable.

"The state will now accept final submissions for Contract 406-A," the chief transit commissioner announced from the podium. "We have received a sole verified bid from Sterling Structural Holdings, including an exclusive intellectual property matrix for automated foundation stability."

"The copyright for that matrix is under investigation for plagiarism, Commissioner!" Clara Vance's voice rang out from the back of the room like a gunshot.

The entire ballroom erupted into an immediate frenzy of camera flashes and whispered murmurs. Clara marched down the central aisle, holding a silver digital drive, accompanied by Matthew, who wore a clean, tailored suit, and Eleanor, who walked with her chin held high.

"This is an outrage!" Arthur Sterling shouted, standing up from his table, his aristocratic face flushing a violent shade of red. "Security, remove these disruptors! This is a closed state regulatory session!"

"Under Section 12 of the Federal Public Safety Act," Matthew said, stepping up to the secondary microphone before security could reach him, "any citizen possesses the right to introduce emergency structural telemetry if a public facility shows an imminent danger of catastrophic failure. We filed the core-drilling and laser data with the Federal Emergency Management Agency at 6:00 AM today."

With a single tap on Clara’s tablet, the massive electronic screens in the ballroom flickered, replacing the Sterling corporate logo with a high-definition 3D molecular render of Column Four. The bright red zones of structural degradation flashed across the screen like an open wound.

"The data you are seeing was verified by independent inspectors last night," Matthew announced, his voice carrying the absolute, unshakeable authority of a true scientist. "The current structural layout provided by Sterling Holdings is a fraudulent concealment of critical alloy decay. The building is unsafe. And the patent they are trying to use to fix it... belongs to me."

"You have no standing to file a counter-bid, boy!" Arthur sneered, his voice cracking with a sharp, desperate rage. "You are an unconfirmed doctoral candidate with no corporate assets!"

"He has standing," a deep, unforgettable voice echoed from the side entrance of the ballroom.

The double doors swung open, and Thomas Sterling walked into the light of the television cameras. He wore his old, pristine 2000 executive woolen overcoat, his posture perfectly straight, his grey eyes locked onto his brother with the finality of a judge delivering a sentence.

"My name is Thomas Sterling, founder and majority shareholder of Sterling Structural Holdings," the old man said, his voice silencing every whisper in the room. "I have returned from twenty-five years of exile to vote my sixty percent control of the corporate stock back to the public safety trust. And I am naming Dr. Matthew Hayes as the permanent Chief Executive Officer of this company, effective immediately."
