Chapter 6 - The Siege of the Penthouse

At 6:00 PM, I returned to my downtown penthouse building.

The rain was falling in heavy, gray sheets against the glass towers of the city. As my driver pulled into the subterranean garage beneath my building, the building manager, Marcus, stepped out of the security booth holding a clipboard.

"Ms. Lin," Marcus said respectfully, bowing his head slightly as I rolled down the window. "There are four people sitting in our guest lobby right now. They've been trying to get up to your penthouse floor for three hours."

"Let me guess," I said, pulling my silk coat tighter around my neck. "Beatrice, Julian, Chloe, and Ethan?"

"And Mr. Arthur Bennett as well," Marcus added. "The elderly gentleman looks quite distressed. The mother has been demanding to see the building owner, claiming that you have stolen family property. Should I call the police department to have them removed for trespassing?"

I looked at my reflection in the side mirror—the bruise on my cheek had turned a deep, dramatic shade of violet, contrasting sharply with my pale skin.

"No, Marcus," I said softly. "Bring them to the private conference room on the second floor. Do not allow them up to my apartment. And have two security guards posted inside the room."

"Understood, Ms. Lin."

Ten minutes later, I walked into the glass-walled second-floor conference room.

The transformation in the Bennett family was staggering. In less than twenty-four hours, the glossy veneer of aristocratic perfection had completely cracked.

Beatrice was pacing the room, her hair slightly unraveled from its usual pristine chignon, her face pale and lined with raw fury. Julian sat in a leather chair staring at his phone, which was ringing incessantly with calls from his creditors. Chloe was crying quietly into a tissue, her designer mascara running down her cheeks.

Arthur sat quietly in the corner, holding his wooden cane with shaking hands, looking older and more frail than I had ever seen him.

And Ethan stood by the window, his eyes bloodshot, his suit jacket gone, looking like a man who had been dragged through a hedge backward.

When the heavy wooden door clicked shut behind me, Beatrice turned on her heel, her eyes wide with psychotic rage.

"YOU MONSTER!" Beatrice shrieked, taking three rapid steps toward me before the two uniformed security guards instantly stepped into her path, blocking her like a brick wall. "You vicious, low-born little snake! Do you have any idea what you've done to my family today?! My foundation! My reputation! My friends are calling me asking if I'm going to prison!"

I stood near the head of the conference table, resting my hands lightly on the back of a leather chair.

"Your foundation was a money-laundering front for your shopping habit, Beatrice," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion. "If you go to prison, it won't be because of my email. It will be because you spent a hundred and forty thousand dollars of tax-deductible charitable donations at Chanel."

"Maya, please!" Chloe sobbed, stepping forward, her voice cracked and hysterical. "My friends are kicked me out of the auction group chat! The club revoked my locker! They towed Julian’s car right in front of the neighbors! How could you humiliate us like this over dinner?!"

I looked at Chloe—the woman who had calmly picked up my lipstick from the floor while her brother hit me, telling me to "just apologize so we can move on."

"You picked up my lipstick, Chloe," I said softly. "When I was lying on the hardwood floor, bleeding from my mouth, you didn't ask if I was hurt. You worried about your dinner routine. Why should I care about your locker?"

Chloe choked on her breath, stepping back as if she had been slapped herself.

Julian stood up, slamming his fists onto the table. "Maya, listen to me! My firm suspended me! If you don't send a retraction email to the managing partners by tomorrow morning, they're going to disbar me! You're destroying my career!"

"You destroyed your career when you used my company's tax ID to guarantee your illegal gambling debt, Julian," I replied coldly. "You're lucky I'm not filing criminal fraud charges against you personally. Yet."

Ethan walked slowly forward, pushing his brother aside. He looked at me—really looked at me—his eyes taking in the purple bruise on my face, the high-end tailored suit, the absolute, unshakeable calm in my posture.

For the first time in five years, Ethan looked terrified.

"Maya..." Ethan’s voice trembled, dropping into a pleading whisper. "Please. We're married. We took vows. For better or for worse... through richer or poorer..."

"I took those vows to a man I thought loved me, Ethan," I said, looking him straight in the eye. "Not to a pimp who sold his wife's labor to keep his family living in luxury. You hit me twice. You watched me fall. And then you raised your hand to hit me a third time."

"I was angry!" Ethan cried out, tears spilling down his face. "I was stressed! My mother was pressing me! I didn't mean it!"

"You meant every second of it," I said. "You thought I was weak. You thought because I had no family of my own, I would take anything just to belong to yours."

I pulled a thick blue folder from my leather portfolio and set it gently on the center of the conference table.

"What is that?" Arthur’s trembling voice spoke up from the corner—his first words of the evening.

"Those are the uncontested divorce papers," I said, looking at Arthur with a sliver of genuine pity. "Along with the asset settlement agreements. Ethan signs them tonight, renouncing all claims to Lin-Global Logistics, my properties, and my personal wealth. In exchange, I will not execute the immediate criminal prosecution of Julian and Beatrice for corporate fraud."

Beatrice let out a strangled gasp. "Sign away your marital rights?! Ethan, don't you dare touch those papers! He's entitled to half of everything she owns!"

I turned my gaze slowly back to Beatrice.

"If Ethan doesn't sign those papers by 9:00 AM tomorrow," I said softly, "David Vance will submit the complete forensic accounting audit—along with the domestic violence police report and the emergency room medical records—directly to the State Attorney's Office. Julian will go to state prison for fraud. Beatrice will go to federal prison for tax evasion. And Ethan will be indicted as a co-conspirator."

The room fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.

Julian looked at his mother, his face white with terror. "Mom... sign it. Ethan, sign it! I can't go to prison! I can't!"

"Shut up, Julian!" Beatrice screamed.

"No, Mom! You shut up!" Julian roared back, turning on his mother with a sudden, feral desperation that made Chloe scream. "She has us! She’s had us the whole time! She holds every loan! She holds every deed! We have nothing without her!"

I didn't wait to watch them devour each other.

I turned on my heel, walked out of the conference room, and let the heavy glass door shut behind me, leaving the Bennett family to fight over the ruins of the empire they had built on my back.
