Chapter 8 - THE FALL OF THE COLLINS EMPIRE

Three months later.

The spring sun was shining bright over downtown Cincinnati, melting the last traces of winter snow from the city streets.

Inside the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio, the final sentencing hearing for United States v. Martin Collins, Patrick Collins, and Brandon Collins had just concluded.

The trial had been swift, devastating, and absolute.

Faced with overwhelming forensic accounting evidence presented by Arthur Vance and the federal prosecutors—including hidden bank accounts, forged sub-contractor invoices, and wire fraud—all three defendants had entered guilty pleas to charges of corporate embezzlement and tax fraud.

Judge Sterling presided over the sentencing.

"Martin Collins," Judge Sterling announced, his voice echoing through the packed courtroom. "For the charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and corporate embezzlement totaling $1.8 million, you are hereby sentenced to seven years in federal custody, without the possibility of parole, and ordered to pay full restitution in the amount of $1,840,000."

Martin, dressed in a orange prison jumpsuit with heavy iron chains around his waist and ankles, collapsed against the defense table, letting out a pitiful, breathless groan.

"Patrick Collins—sentenced to four years in federal custody." "Brandon Collins—sentenced to three years in federal custody."

As the US Marshals stepped forward to lead the three men away in chains, Martin turned his head frantically toward the gallery, looking for help.

Sitting in the back row was Claire.

She was dressed in simple, faded clothes, her face thin and lined with stress. After losing the house, her car, and her standing in society, she had been forced to move into a tiny one-bedroom apartment in the lower district, working as an entry-level clerk at a local hardware store to pay her basic rent.

Her father reached out his chained hands toward her. "Claire! Help us! Talk to Daniel! Ask him to sign the pardon petition!"

Claire didn't move. She didn't say a word. She watched in silence as her father and brothers were led through the heavy steel doors toward the holding cells, their iron chains rattling loudly against the hard floor.

She knew the truth now.

Daniel had never been a blue-collar loser. He had been a protector. He had been the shield that stood between her family and their own destruction—and the moment they shattered that shield out of arrogance and cruelty, their world was bound to burn.

Claire stood up quietly and walked out of the courtroom alone, disappearing into the crowded city streets.
