Chapter 3 - The Broken Web

The air inside the cramped, smoke-filled diner on 31st Street was thick with the grease of bad hashbrowns and stale coffee.

Teresa Miller sat in a corner booth, her eyes bloodshot, frantically checking her cheap prepaid cellphone every two minutes. Her sleek designer wardrobe was gone, replaced by a faded winter parka she had pulled from the back of her closet. Across from her sat Daniel, his head buried in his hands.

"They served the paper, Daniel!" Teresa hissed, leaning across the sticky table. "The marshal put an orange notice on my front door! They're changing the locks on Friday! Where am I supposed to go?! I can't live in a motel!"

"Mom, shut up and let me think!" Daniel snapped, pulling his fingers through his greasy hair. "The lawyers are doing everything they can. Evelyn told me—"

"Evelyn?!" Teresa interrupted, her voice rising to a sharp screech. "Who the hell is Evelyn?! You keep mentioning this woman! Is she paying for your lawyer? Is she going to give us a place to stay?"

"Evelyn is managing the business side of things," Daniel said evasively, shifting uncomfortably in his booth. "Just trust me, okay? Once this legal storm blows over, we’ll have resources. I set things aside."

At that exact moment, the bell above the diner door chimed.

Arthur Vance walked in, accompanied by a tall, broad-shouldered man in a dark suit carrying a leather courier bag. Vance scanned the room, spotted the mother and son in the corner booth, and walked directly toward them.

Daniel went pale. "Vance... what are you doing here? This is harassment! My attorney said you aren't allowed to contact me directly!"

"I’m not here to talk to you, Daniel," Arthur Vance said calmly, pulling up a chair from an adjacent table and sitting at the end of their booth. "I’m here to serve court documents to your mother regarding the fraudulent conveyance of property."

"I don't have anything left!" Teresa wept, clutching her handbag to her ribs. "You took my apartment! You took my life! What else do you want from me, you monster?!"

"I don't want anything from you, Mrs. Miller," Arthur said smoothly. "I am simply legally required to inform you, as a co-defendant in the civil asset recovery suit, of all assets recently uncovered by the court-appointed forensic accountant."

Arthur nodded to the man beside him, who pulled a thick stack of real estate deeds and banking transfers from the courier bag and laid them flat on the diner table, right next to Teresa’s coffee cup.

"What is this?" Teresa asked, frowning through her tears.

"These are the deed registration papers for Unit 14B at the Azure Palms Condominium in South Beach, Miami," Arthur explained, pointing his silver pen at a highlighted signature. "Purchased fourteen months ago for six hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Fully furnished. Ocean view."

Teresa blinked, confused. "Miami? Who bought a condo in Miami?"

"Your son, Daniel," Arthur replied clearly. "Co-owned under a shell corporation with Evelyn Vance. The funds were transferred directly from the Apex Horizon account—the exact same account where Daniel diverted the money stolen from Clara, as well as the funds he claimed he couldn't access to pay off your casino debts in Hammond."

The silence that fell over the diner booth was deafening.

Teresa slowly turned her head to look at her son. The color had completely drained from Daniel's face. He looked like a man standing before a firing squad.

"Daniel?" Teresa’s voice wasn't loud. It was a terrifying, hollow whisper. "You... you bought a beach house? While the men from the boat were showing up at my door? While I was begging you for five thousand dollars to stop them from breaking my ankles?"

"Mom... wait, listen to me—" Daniel stammered, reaching out to touch her hand. "It was an investment! Evelyn said—"

"You let me crawl on my knees to Clara!" Teresa screamed, her voice exploding through the quiet diner, causing several patrons and the cook to drop their utensils. "You made me ask that girl for money! You let her humiliate me! You made me look like a beggar while you were buying oceanfront condos with another woman?!"

"Mom, it wasn't like that! Evelyn was managing the funds—"

"You lying, ungrateful, miserable little worm!" Teresa shrieked. She grabbed her heavy ceramic mug full of scalding black coffee and hurled it directly into Daniel's chest.

Daniel screamed as the hot liquid soaked through his shirt. He scrambled backward, falling out of the vinyl booth and crashing onto the diner floor, kicking over a napkin holder.

Teresa stood over him, her face contorted in a mask of pure rage and betrayal. All the toxic devotion she had cultivated for her "perfect son" evaporated in an instant, replaced by the bitter fury of a woman who realized she had been used as a shield by her own child.

"You let them take my home!" Teresa roared, kicking Daniel’s shin as he tried to scramble away on his hands and knees. "You sacrificed me! You ruined everything!"

Arthur Vance calmly stood up, picked up his leather courier bag, and looked down at Daniel, who was whimpering on the floor, clutching his coffee-stained shirt.

"The federal prosecutor’s office is waiting for a phone call, Daniel," Arthur said, his voice cold and precise. "Evelyn Vance has already instructed her attorneys to file an emergency deposition claiming you acted alone, forged her signature on Apex Horizon accounts, and masterminded the entire public corruption scheme. She’s giving you to the FBI on a silver platter."

Daniel looked up from the floor, his eyes filled with pure terror. "She... she wouldn't do that. She promised—"

"Evelyn promises whatever keeps her out of prison," Arthur interrupted. "You have until six o'clock tonight to come to my office with your personal laptop, the original master keys to the Apex files, and sign a full state and federal confession. If you do, Clara may agree to recommend a reduced sentence for bank fraud. If you don't... you will take the fall for Evelyn Vance, the municipal contract fraud, and twenty years in maximum security."

Arthur turned and walked out of the diner, leaving Daniel sobbing on the dirty floor while Teresa continued to scream insults at him, her hands clawing at her own hair in complete hysterical ruin.
