Chapter 8 - The Red Ledger

The blowtorch clattered across the concrete floor, its blue flame scorching a pile of cardboard boxes, setting off a thick cloud of white smoke.

Victor let out a roar of rage, rolling over and grabbing my throat with his uninjured left hand. His face was covered in black soot, his eyes bloodshot and wild.

"You relentless little bitch!" Victor choked out, squeezing my windpipe with terrifying force. "You’re just like your father! Always interfering! Always trying to be the hero!"

I clawed at his wrist, my vision turning black around the edges as oxygen was cut off from my brain. My hand fumbled along the dusty concrete floor, searching for anything to break his grip.

My fingers brushed against the heavy brass blowtorch.

With the last remaining strength in my muscles, I grabbed the metal fuel canister of the blowtorch and slammed it directly into the side of Victor’s head.

THUD!

Victor let out a groaning gasp, his grip loosening as he collapsed sideways onto the concrete, dazed and bleeding from his temple.

I gasped for air, dragging myself away, my chest heaving as sweet, cool oxygen rushed back into my lungs.

I reached forward, snatching the dark-red leather ledger before the spreading sparks could touch its pages.

I flipped open the cover.

Inside, in my father’s precise, neat handwriting, were detailed daily logs spanning three years:

October 14: Victor transferred $450,000 from the primary logistics account to an entity named Apex Global in Panama. Signature forged.

November 02: Confronted Victor today. He threatened to ruin the family if I went to the police. I have secured the original bank routing slips in the back sleeve of this book.

I reached into the back sleeve of the leather binder.

Tucked neatly inside were twelve original, certified bank deposit slips bearing Victor Hayes’s genuine signature and fingerprints, detailing the exact financial theft that had led to my father’s murder. But even more critically, slipped between the pages was a small, digital audio mini-cassette tape labeled: CONVERSATION WITH VICTOR - NOV 11.

"Drop the book, Maya," a cold voice rasped.

I looked up.

Victor was standing three feet away, swaying slightly on his feet, holding a jagged, broken piece of steel pipe he had picked up from the floor. Blood was streaming down his face, making him look like a monster straight out of a nightmare.

"Give me the tape," Victor demanded, stepping closer. "Give it to me, or I swear I’ll crush your skull right here."

Before he could take another step, a loud, thunderous voice echoed from the locker entrance.

"DROP THE WEAPON! POLICE!"

Detective Delgado and four armed state troopers flooded the storage unit, their high-powered rifles aimed directly at Victor’s chest.

Victor looked at the troopers, then at the red ledger clutched in my hands, and finally at his own broken, bloody hands.

The steel pipe fell from his fingers, clattering against the concrete floor.

Delgado stepped forward, slamming Victor face-first against the storage wall, pulling his arms behind his back, and snapping the heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists.

"Victor Hayes," Delgado said, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "You are under arrest for the murder of Arthur Hayes, attempted murder, arson, and witness intimidation."

Delgado turned to look at me, offering a weary, deeply respectful nod. "We got him, Maya. It’s over."
