Chapter 8 - The Verdict and the Reckoning

It took the jury less than forty-five minutes to reach a verdict.

When the court reconvened, the judge stood before a silent room.

“On count one, Federal RICO conspiracy—Guilty.” “On count two, Grand Larceny in the First Degree—Guilty.” “On count three, Felony Extortion—Guilty.” “On count four, Wire Fraud and Bank Fraud—Guilty.”

Guilty. Guilty. Guilty. Across all thirty-eight counts against Julian, Raymond, and Victoria Miller.

The judge looked down at Julian with stern, unforgiving eyes. “Julian Miller, you demonstrated a chilling, sociopathic disregard for human dignity, hiding behind the sacred vow of marriage to exploit and abuse the woman who trusted you. I sentence you to eighteen years in federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole.”

Julian let out a loud, pathetic wail, collapsing into his chair as marshals grabbed his arms.

“Raymond Miller, for your central role in this financial syndicate, I sentence you to twenty-two years in federal penitentiary.”

“Victoria Miller, for your active participation in conspiracy, money laundering, and extortion, I sentence you to eight years in federal custody.”

Victoria shrieked, clutching her lawyer’s arm as she was handcuffed and led toward the holding cell doors.

As Julian was being dragged past the prosecution gallery, he stopped, looking at me with bloodshot, tear-soaked eyes.

“Elena... please!” Julian choked out, weeping openly. “Say something! Please... I’m going to die in there! Forgive me! Please tell them you forgive me!”

I stood up slowly, smoothing down my tailored blazer. I walked over to the wooden partition, standing inches from his trembling, handcuffed frame.

I didn't yell. I didn't insult him.

I simply smiled—that same, brilliant, unbreakable eight-tooth customer service smile from our wedding morning.

“All right, Julian,” I whispered softly, every word cut like diamonds. “I understand.”

Julian let out a final, shattered sob as the federal marshals pulled him through the heavy steel doors, locking him away from the world he had tried so desperately to conquer through cruelty.
