Chapter 9 - The Sweet Taste of Victory

One year later.

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was bathed in golden light, filled with the laughter and chatter of New York’s elite. It was the annual Pendelton Foundation Gala, a charity event I had established to fund affordable housing and maternal healthcare initiatives across the city.

I stood near the entrance, looking radiant in a custom-made, midnight-blue silk gown. My hair was styled in elegant waves, and I wore a simple, stunning emerald necklace.

"You look absolutely breathtaking, Clara," a warm, deep voice said from behind me.

I turned to see Leo Vance, Richard’s nephew and a brilliant pediatric surgeon who had recently joined the foundation’s board. Over the past year, Leo had become a constant, supportive presence in my life. He was kind, incredibly intelligent, and he loved Arthur as if he were his own.

"Thank you, Leo," I smiled, accepting a glass of sparkling water from his hand. "How is Arthur doing with his nanny in the suite upstairs?"

"Sleeping like a baby—literally," Leo laughed, his eyes warm and filled with genuine admiration. "He was showing off his new walking skills to everyone before he went down. He’s going to run this city one day, just like his mother."

As we chatted, I noticed a sudden hush fall over the entrance of the ballroom.

I looked over to see a woman trying to push her way past the security guards. She was wearing an outdated, slightly stained designer gown, her hair disheveled, and her face pale with desperation.

It was Evelyn Sterling.

She had somehow managed to sneak past the hotel lobby, desperate to make one last public plea. The security guards held her firmly, but politely, preventing her from entering the ballroom.

"Clara! Clara, please!" Evelyn screamed, her voice cracking as she spotted me. The entire room fell silent, turning to watch the spectacle. "Just listen to me! I have nothing left! I am living in a slum! You took everything from us! Have some mercy!"

Leo immediately stepped in front of me, but I gently placed a hand on his arm. "It’s okay, Leo. I’ve got this."

I walked slowly and calmly toward the entrance, the crowd parting for me like the Red Sea. I stood before Evelyn, looking down at her with a calm, serene expression. There was no anger in my heart, no desire to scream or humiliate her. Only absolute indifference.

"Evelyn," I said quietly, my voice carrying clearly in the silent room. "You are trespassing. I suggest you leave before I have the police arrest you."

"Please, Clara," Evelyn begged, tears running down her wrinkled face, ruining her makeup. "Julian is broken. I am ruined. Just give us a small allowance. A monthly stipend! For the sake of your child’s family name!"

"My child’s name is Arthur Pendelton," I replied, my voice steady and firm. "He has no association with the Sterling name, and he never will. You threw me out because you thought I was a penniless nobody who would ruin your reputation. Now, look at you. You ruined your own reputation, your own business, and your own life. You reaped exactly what you sowed."

I turned to the security guards. "Please escort her out of the building. And make sure she is barred from all future events."

"Yes, Ms. Pendelton," the guard replied.

As Evelyn was led away, crying and shouting, I turned back to the ballroom. I met Leo’s eyes, and he gave me a proud, supportive nod.

The guests began to chatter again, the music swelled, and the gala continued. The ghost of my past had finally been exorcised. I walked back into the warmth of the room, ready to celebrate the future.
