Chapter 2 - The Handcuffs and the Heirloom

The sight of federal badge clips gleaming under the warm amber lighting sent the high-society crowd into absolute pandemonium. Women gasped, clutching their pearl necklaces; wealthy hedge-fund managers instinctively pulled out their phones to call their legal defense teams; and my mother looked as if she were about to faint straight onto the dessert presentation table.

"Arthur Ingram? Eleanor Ingram? Vivien Ingram?" Lead Special Agent Marcus Vance called out, his deep voice carrying easily across the cavernous room.

Arthur stood rigid, his hands trembling violently now. "Agent Vance... what is the meaning of this outrage? I know the U.S. Attorney personally! I had dinner with him on Thursday!"

"Then you can ask him for a courtesy visit in federal holding, Mr. Ingram," Agent Vance replied without a trace of amusement. "You, your wife, and your daughter are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, grand larceny, forging federal financial documents, and corporate embezzlement."

"No! No! Get away from me!" Vivien shrieked as a female officer stepped toward her, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from her tactical belt. "I am wearing a sixty-thousand-dollar custom Vera Wang dress! You cannot put metal on me!"

"Turn around, ma'am," the officer instructed firmly.

"Daniel! Do something!" Vivien screamed, her voice cracking into a pathetic, desperate sob as her arms were forcibly twisted behind her back. The smooth white fabric of her gown bunched up grotesquely under the officer's grip. "You're a lawyer! You're my lawyer! You're my husband!"

"I am a federal children's advocate, Vivien," Daniel said, standing tall beside me and Ethan. "And as of four o'clock this afternoon, our marriage license application has been formally revoked. There is no wedding. There is only an indictment."

"You bastard!" Eleanor roared, completely losing her polished exterior as she lunged toward Daniel with her long, manicured nails outstretched like talons. "You snake! We brought you into our family! We gave you our contacts! You used us!"

Before she could reach Daniel, two NYPD officers intercepted her, grabbing her arms and forcing her down toward the nearest chair. Her glass of expensive champagne fell over, soaking the bottom of her silk Valentino gown in sticky, bubbly liquid.

"Eleanor Ingram, you have the right to remain silent," the officer droned, snapping the cuffs over her delicate wrists with a harsh click-clack. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..."

Ethan buried his face deeper into my waist, trembling violently at the chaos. I covered his ears with both hands, tears finally streaming down my cheeks—not out of sadness, but out of sheer, overwhelming exhaustion and shock.

For thirty-two years, these three people had made me feel like an insect under a microscope. They had made me believe I was ugly, unwanted, stupid, and broken. They had relegated me to the basement bedroom of our Greenwich mansion while Vivien took equestrian lessons in France. They had told me my son was a curse, a financial burden, a stain on the family name.

And now, they were being led out of the grandest ballroom in Manhattan in chains, while three hundred of their wealthiest peers whipped out their iPhones to record every agonizing second of their downfall.

"Morgan..."

I looked up. My father, Arthur, was standing a few feet away, held loosely by an officer. His hair was disheveled, his eyes bloodshot, his aristocratic composure completely destroyed.

"Morgan, please," Arthur whispered, his voice raspy and pathetic. "Tell them it's a mistake. Talk to Daniel. We're your family, baby girl. I gave you a home. I paid for your nursing school..."

"You didn't pay for my nursing school, Dad," I said, my voice surprisingly clear, echoing over the noise of the crowd. "Grandfather's trust paid for it. Except you took eighty percent of what he left me and put it into Vivien's fashion startup."

Arthur flinched as if I had slapped him across the face.

"Take them out," Agent Vance ordered.

The police officers marched Arthur, Eleanor, and Vivien down the central aisle of the ballroom. Vivien was sobbing hysterically, her eyes smudged with black mascara, while my mother kept screaming obscenities at the press photographers who had already gathered at the hotel doors.

As the heavy oak doors closed behind them, a suffocating silence descended back upon the ballroom.

Daniel turned back to me. He crouched down once more, his face filled with concern. "Morgan... are you alright? Can you stand?"

I tried to push myself up, but my knees buckled under the sudden release of tension. Daniel caught me instantly, his powerful hands steadying my waist and shoulder before I could hit the floor. His touch was warm, firm, and completely safe.

"I've got you," Daniel murmured gently. "I've got both of you."

He picked Ethan up in his right arm as if the five-year-old weighed nothing at all. Ethan instinctively wrapped his small arms around Daniel's neck, holding on for dear life. With his left arm, Daniel supported my weight, guiding me slowly toward the private service exit behind the stage, far away from the gawking eyes of Manhattan high society.

As we stepped out into the cool, rain-slicked night air of East 76th Street, a sleek black Maybach pulled up to the curb. The driver immediately rushed around to open the passenger door.

"Where are you taking us?" I managed to ask, my voice barely a thread as the adrenaline began to fade, leaving behind a deep, bone-crushing fatigue.

Daniel helped me into the plush leather back seat, then carefully climbed in beside me, holding Ethan on his lap.

"To my apartment in Tribeca," Daniel said quietly as the driver shut the door, sealing out the noise of the city. "You and Ethan are never going back to that tiny, mold-infested basement apartment in Queens, Morgan. Your grandfather's estate has officially been restored to your name. As of tonight, you own the Greenwich mansion, the family trust, and everything inside it."

I stared at him in complete disbelief, the city lights flickering across his sharp profile as the luxury car glided smoothly into Manhattan traffic.

"Why?" I choked out, a fresh wave of tears spilling over my eyelashes. "Why did you do this, Daniel? You were going to marry her. You spent six months planning a life with Vivien..."

Daniel turned his head to look at me, his dark eyes filled with an intensity that made my heart leap into my throat.

"I never intended to marry her, Morgan," Daniel said softly. "I only agreed to the courtship to get inside your father's private server. I've been investigating the Ingram family for two years."

May you like

He reached out, his warm thumb gently wiping a stray tear from my cheek.

"And I did it because your late grandfather was my mentor," Daniel added softly. "And before he died, he made me promise one thing: that I would protect his favorite granddaughter from the wolves she called a family."
