Chapter 9 - The Sovereign Table

It was a beautiful, crisp spring afternoon in May of 2026. The high oak trees of the estate were covered in fresh, vibrant green leaves, and the air smelled of blooming honeysuckle and fresh-cut grass from the fields.
The massive oak table in Grandpa Arthur’s garden had been pushed next to the open stone patio, overflowing with food—platters of grilled chicken, fresh summer salads, and a large basket of warm artisanal sourdough bread from the local bakery.
I stood at the head of the table, wearing a crisp blue linen shirt, my shoulders broad, my posture straight and confident. I had spent the last five months managing three separate international shipping lanes at the Port of Baltimore, my salary double what I had made at my old local job, my professional reputation growing with every manifest I cleared.
Grandpa Arthur sat at my right hand, looking up at me with an expression of pure, unadulterated pride. Grandma Eleanor sat at my left, holding a glass of fresh lemonade, her eyes bright and happy under the afternoon sun.
"A toast," I said, lifting my glass of iced tea.
The small table went quiet, Marcus and Sarah looking up with bright, respectful smiles.

"To the forks we put down," I said, my voice rich with an emotion that felt as deep as the earth beneath our feet. "To the truth that always finds its way into the light. And to the only ledger that actually matters: a family that looks out for one another, a grandfather who speaks up, and the courage to claim your own life."
"Salute!" the table cheered, clinking their glasses together in a warm, beautiful harmony of laughter and clattering silverware.
