Chapter 8 - The Collapse of the Enablers

While Claire was slowly rebuilding her life from the ashes, my parents were stuck in their own hell of reality.

Without Claire living with them to give them a sense of purpose, and without me to blame for their financial stress, Dad and Mom were forced to face each other in their small one-bedroom condo.

In September, Dad called me. It wasn't an angry call. It was the voice of a broken man.

"Ethan?"

"Hi, Dad," I answered calmly.

"Your... your mother and I are going to marriage counseling," Dad said softly. "The counselor told me I needed to make amends with the people I’ve hurt. I... I know I hurt you, Ethan."

I took a deep breath, sitting on my balcony. "You didn't just hurt me, Dad. You used me. You traded my youth and hard work so you didn't have to deal with Claire's problems."

"I know," Dad squeaked, his voice cracking with tears. "I was terrified of losing Claire. I thought if I kept giving her money, she’d stay. And I took you for granted because you were always the 'good kid.' You were the reliable one. I thought you would just... endure it."

"Being the 'good kid' shouldn't feel like a life sentence, Dad," I said.

"It shouldn't," Dad agreed, sobbing openly now. "I’m making the monthly payments to your account for the debt. I haven't missed one. I work thirty hours a week at the hardware store now. It’s hard on my back, but... every time my back hurts, I think about you working night shifts at the warehouse while I slept in my big house."

Hearing my proud, domineering father admit his fault didn't make me feel triumphant. It just made me feel a quiet, somber sense of closure.

"I appreciate the payments, Dad," I said honestly. "And I’m glad you’re getting help."

"Can I... can I see you sometime?" Dad asked timidly. "Not for money. Just... coffee? I want to meet Maya. Claire told me you have a girlfriend."

I looked out at the afternoon sky. "Let’s take it slow, Dad. But... yes. Next month. We can get coffee."
