Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Viper

The grand lobby of First National Bank was bustling, but Vanessa didn't notice the crowd. She stood at the counter of the private vault section, tapping her foot impatiently. In her hand was a forged power of attorney giving her access to Daniel’s family heirlooms and emergency cash reserves.

"I'm sorry for the delay, Ms. DuPont," the bank teller said politely. "The vault manager needs to sign off on this specific tier of access."

"Well, tell him to hurry up. I have a flight to catch," Vanessa snapped, adjusting her dark sunglasses.

"You won't be catching that flight, Vanessa."

Vanessa spun around. Daniel walked toward her, flanked by Marcus and two men in dark suits who carried the distinct aura of federal agents.

Vanessa’s face tightened, but she quickly put on her victim persona. "Daniel! Thank god you're here. This incompetent bank staff is refusing to let me secure your family valuables. I heard there was a security breach at your office, and I wanted to protect your assets!"

"The only security breach in my life, Vanessa, was letting you into it," Daniel said, his voice ringing through the quiet bank lobby.

One of the men in suits stepped forward, producing a badge. "Vanessa Jenkins, also known as Vanessa DuPont. I am Special Agent Miller with the FBI. You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, grand larceny, identity theft, and forgery."

Vanessa backed away, her heel clicking sharply against the marble floor. "This is a mistake! Daniel, tell them! I love you! I did everything for us!"

"You did it for Julian," Daniel said coldly. "He’s already in handcuffs at the office, Vanessa. He sang like a canary the moment the feds walked into his room. He told them everything. About Chicago, about my company, about how you planned to leave me broke and facing bankruptcy."

Vanessa’s beautiful face contorted into something hideous. The sweet, elegant woman Daniel thought he knew vanished, replaced by a snarling predator. "You pathetic idiot," she spat, her voice dripping with venom as the agents stepped forward to cuff her wrists behind her back. "You were so easy to manipulate. You threw away a woman who actually loved you for a few smiles and a tight dress. You deserve everything that happened to you!"

As she was led away in handcuffs, screaming curses, Daniel stood perfectly still. The financial danger had passed. The company was saved. But the realization of what he had destroyed in his personal life felt like a death sentence.
