Chapter 10 - The Horizon of Light

The sun began to set over the lake, painting the Chicago skyline in brilliant shades of amber, copper, and deep violet. The sound of laughter, clinking crystal, and children’s voices drifted out from the open-air pavilion where the reception was under way.

Nathan led me out to the edge of the stone terrace, away from the music, his arm wrapped tightly around my waist to keep the cool autumn breeze from reaching my bare back. He had removed his tuxedo jacket, draping it over my shoulders with a protective familiarity that had become my favorite part of the day.

"Look at them, Vivian," Nathan murmured, gesturing toward the lawn where Ethan was currently playing tag with Vance’s young nephews, his bare feet flying across the grass without a single trace of weakness.

"We did it," I whispered, leaning my head against his powerful shoulder, the silver band of my ring pressing against his linen shirt. "The wolves are gone."

"The wolves will always try to come back, my love," Nathan said softly, his fingers gently lifting my chin until my eyes met his fierce, unyielding gray ones. "But they don't understand what they're fighting now. Before today, I fought to defend an empire. Tonight, I fight to defend a home."

He leaned down, his lips meeting mine in a deep, possessive kiss that tasted of sweet champagne, the smoke of the hearth, and an absolute promise for eternity. The briefcase had hit the gravel six months ago, and the fear had nearly broken my knees, but the courage of a little boy and the unyielding loyalty of a maid had rewritten the destiny of the Blackwell line.

As the first stars began to pierce the deep purple of the twilight sky, casting their reflection over the calm waters of the lake, the psychological warfare disappeared into the dark for good, and our eternal dawn had finally, beautifully arrived.
