Chapter 5 - The Penthouse Reckoning

The grand ballroom was a sea of black ties, diamond necklaces, and glittering crystal glasses. Julian Sterling stood at the center of the stage, a microphone in his hand, a smug, flawless smile on his face as he looked out over the wealthy crowd.
"To progress, to luxury, and to the unwavering standards of the Aldridge Grand," Julian toasted, raising his glass.
The crowd began to applaud, but the applause was cut short as the massive double doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.
Marcus Whitfield walked down the center aisle. He hadn't changed his clothes. He still wore his worn boots and his faded blue jeans, looking like a phantom from the real world crashing a masquerade ball. Eleanor Vance walked half a step behind him, carrying a stack of legal documents.
Julian froze on stage, the microphone trembling slightly in his grip. "Marcus... Mr. Whitfield! We didn't expect you until tomorrow's board meeting."
Marcus stepped up onto the stage, taking the microphone from Julian’s hand. The silence in the ballroom was absolute.
"Four years ago, I built this lobby to be a place of welcome," Marcus said, his voice echoing through the state-of-the-art sound system. "Tonight, I arrived here with my daughter. Your front desk clerks tried to send us out into the rain because they didn't like my jacket. And they did so because you, Julian, sold our family's room for fifty thousand dollars in cash to cover your debts."
A collective gasp rippled through the audience. The CEO of the medical device company turned a deep shade of scarlet.
"This is an outrage!" Julian shouted, trying to salvage his dignity. "You can't prove this!"

Eleanor stepped forward, turning the massive projector screen on the stage wall from the medical company's logo to a direct bank statement showing the cash deposits into Julian's personal account, timestamped at 4:15 PM that afternoon.
"Julian Sterling," Marcus said, looking down at the broken man. "You are terminated effectively immediately. And the federal fraud investigators are waiting for you in the lobby."
