Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Daniel spent the afternoon sitting alone in his silent office, staring out the floor-to-ceiling glass windows at the Chicago skyline. From his fifty-eighth-floor view, he could see the rusted steel frame of the Chicago Riverfront Tower sitting completely idle—cranes frozen against the gray autumn sky, construction crews gone, a silent monument to his own arrogance.

At 3:00 PM, the door to his office clicked open.

Tessa walked in. She was impeccably dressed, but the tight, anxious lines around her mouth betrayed her composure. She carried a leather portfolio under her arm.

"Daniel," she said, her tone cautious, almost fragile. "We need to talk."

Daniel didn't turn away from the window. "Did you come to check if I'm still an executive worth having around, Tessa?"

Tessa flinched, but she stepped further into the room, setting the portfolio on his desk. "I came to present a solution. My agency’s legal team drafted a proposal. If you resign today and transfer your remaining personal assets into a private holding company, we can launch a new consultancy firm together. We can use my network—"

Daniel turned around slowly, looking at her with a quiet, profound pity.

"A new firm?" Daniel asked softly. "Tessa, the entire business world knows I built my firm on my ex-wife's stolen patents. My name is toxic. No investor will touch me. No client will hire us."

"We can rebrand!" Tessa argued, her voice rising in desperate pitch. "We can move to New York or Miami! Daniel, you still have millions in personal savings! We can start over!"

Daniel walked over to his desk and looked down at the portfolio she had brought. It wasn't a plan to save him; it was a plan to protect her agency's financial pipeline before the ship sank completely.

"I lost twelve years of my life because I thought success was measured by how many people looked at me with envy," Daniel said, his voice strangely calm. "I gave up a woman who built my foundation for a life of polished lies."

He looked into Tessa's sharp, beautiful face and realized, with devastating clarity, that there was nothing real between them. Their entire relationship had been built on secret meetings, corporate adrenaline, and mutual ego-stroking. Without the glamorous backdrop of his CEO title, there was nothing left to hold them together.

"I'm resigning today, Tessa," Daniel said quietly. "But I'm not starting a new firm with you."

Tessa stared at him, her eyes wide with disbelief. "What are you saying?"

"I'm saying it's over," Daniel replied gently. "All of it."

Tessa’s face hardened, the warmth vanishing from her expression in an instant. She grabbed her portfolio off the desk. "You're an idiot, Daniel. You let her destroy you, and now you're just giving up."

She turned on her heel and walked out of his office, slamming the heavy door behind her. Daniel stood alone in the quiet room, feeling a strange, unexpected lightness in his chest.
