Chapter 10 - A New Foundation

One year later.

The early spring sunshine streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my new creative agency suite in downtown. My business, Monroe Design Studios, had expanded into a full team of five designers.

The year had brought profound changes. Derek had downsized his business, sold his luxury car, and moved into a modest townhome, working through debt and attending therapy. When he needed childcare, he hired professional babysitters and paid them standard rates.

My father’s health had improved dramatically, freed from Derek's financial chaos. My parents and I had re-established a healthy relationship built on mutual respect.

On a bright Saturday afternoon, I hosted a small family gathering at my new home to celebrate my thirty-third birthday.

My parents arrived early with fresh lilies. Derek brought Lucas and Maya over, holding out a small wrapped gift.

“Happy birthday, Jackie,” Derek said quietly, offering a humble smile. “The kids drew cards for you.”

“Thank you, Derek,” I smiled. “Would you like to stay for a cup of coffee?”

“I’d like that, Jackie. Thank you.”

We sat on the patio, drinking coffee while the children played in the yard. There were no demands, no leather planners, no ambush schedules—just quiet, respectful conversation between adults who had finally learned where one person ended and another began.

I looked down at the hand-drawn card from my niece, feeling a deep, profound sense of peace. I had built my boundaries not out of hatred, but out of self-respect. And in doing so, I hadn't destroyed my family—I had saved myself, and given them a chance to finally grow up.
