Chapter 9 - Closing the Ledger

Two years after that freezing November night.

I received a final parcel from the Cook County Probate and Asset Forfeiture Department.

Inside was the final deed of full, unencumbered ownership for the West Loop condominium, along with a check for $320,000—the final distribution from the liquidated assets of Veritas LLC, awarded to me as compensation for financial damage and restitution.

Daniel’s final appeal had been denied. He had five more years to serve in federal prison.

Margaret had been moved to a state-subsidized assisted living facility in southern Indiana. Stripped of her influence, her wealth, and her son’s presence, she spent her days in silent isolation, forgotten by the high-society social circles she had once bragged about.

I stood in the center of my bright, warm living room.

I held the small silver voice recorder in my hand—the tiny device that had saved my life.

I walked over to the balcony. The autumn breeze was cool, but it no longer felt freezing. It felt crisp, refreshing, filled with promise.

I opened my hand and let the small silver device drop into a secure lockbox on my desk. I didn't need to destroy it, nor did I need to obsess over it. It was a piece of history—a monument to the night I chose freedom over submission.
