Chapter 8 - A Promise Written in Gold

Later that evening, the sun set over Lake Michigan, casting a brilliant golden rose light across the private terrace of the Whitman estate in Lake Forest.
The estate—a magnificent stone property surrounded by fifty acres of private forest and white hydrangea gardens—was filled with the soft sounds of classical music and children’s laughter.
Inside the nursery, the three toddlers were fast asleep in their white wooden cribs, their tiny faces peaceful under the soft glow of a nightlight.
Claire walked out onto the marble terrace, holding a glass of sparkling cider. She wore a simple, beautiful white linen dress that caught the warm evening breeze.
Julian stepped out behind her, wrapping his arms gently around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder.
"The children are asleep?" Julian asked softly.
"Out cold," Claire laughed softly, leaning back against his warm chest. "They ran around the gardens for three hours."
Julian pulled a small, dark blue velvet box from his pocket and opened it, revealing a magnificent, flawless ten-carat canary diamond ring that glittered like a captured star under the dusk sky.
Claire’s breath caught in her throat. She turned around in his arms, looking up into his warm gray eyes.
"Claire," Julian said, his voice filled with a quiet, steady devotion that left no room for doubt. "Two years ago, I promised your grandfather that I would protect your trust. But over these two years, watching you conquer every storm, watching you raise your children with such grace and fierceness... I realized that my heart belongs entirely to you."
He dropped to one knee on the marble terrace, holding the ring up toward her.
"I don't want to just manage your empire, Claire," Julian said softly. "I want to love you, protect you, and stand beside you as your partner, your husband, and a father to Alexander, Ethan, and Grace for the rest of my life. Will you marry me?"
Claire looked at the man who had pulled her out of the rain, who had fought beside her in every boardroom, who had wiped her tears in the hospital, and who loved her children as his own.
Tears of pure, unadulterated joy spilled over her lashes.

"Yes, Julian," Claire whispered, her voice rich with complete happiness. "Yes! A thousand times, yes!"
Julian slid the ring onto her finger, stood up, and pulled her into a passionate, loving embrace, kissing her under the twilight sky while the gentle waves of the lake sang a quiet song of peace below.
