Chapter 7 - The Final Battle

While the public victory was absolute, corporate transitions are rarely entirely seamless.

Two weeks after their return to New York, the annual Rivers Meridian Shareholder Summit was held at the Plaza Hotel. It was the final hurdle—a gathering of two thousand major institutional investors, pension fund managers, and financial journalists who needed to vote on the formal ratification of the Helvetic Motion merger and approve the new board structure.

Despite Morrison’s arrest, a small faction of conservative institutional investors—led by an old-money hedge fund manager named Harrison Vance—remained skeptical of the dramatic corporate shakeup.

"They're calling it an executive romance scandal," Marcus Vance warned Nolan inside the green room behind the main auditorium stage. "Harrison Vance is telling the press that you promoted Michelle out of personal favoritism rather than professional merit. He’s trying to rally twenty percent of the proxy votes to block her appointment as Chief Strategy Officer."

Michelle sat at the makeup table, adjusting her pearl earrings. She heard Marcus’s words, but her face remained entirely calm.

Nolan’s eyes turned cold. "Harrison Vance is an arrogant dinosaur. I’ll go out on that stage and strip his proxy rights myself."

"No," Michelle said smoothly, standing up and walking over to Nolan.

She adjusted his dark silk tie, looking up into his eyes with absolute confidence.

"This is my title, Nolan," Michelle said gently but firmly. "And this is my strategy. Let me handle Harrison Vance."

Nolan looked into her fierce, brilliant eyes, and his cold anger melted into pure admiration. He took her face in his hands and pressed a firm kiss to her forehead. "The stage is yours, Madam Vice President."

Ten minutes later, the massive auditorium was packed to capacity. Flashbulbs flickered as Nolan walked up to the podium, delivering a crisp, powerful opening address detailing the historic growth of Rivers Meridian and the successful acquisition of Helvetic Motion.

"And now," Nolan announced, turning toward the side wing of the stage, "I yield the floor to our Chief Strategy Officer, Michelle Ward, to present our five-year global expansion model."

Michelle walked onto the stage under the brilliant spotlight. She wore a sharp, tailored black suit that projected effortless authority.

From the third row of the auditorium, Harrison Vance stood up, holding a microphone provided for shareholder questions, his voice dripping with condescension.

"Miss Ward!" Harrison called out, interrupting before she even reached the podium. "Before you present your rosy projections, perhaps you can address the elephant in the room! Is it true that your rapid promotion from corporate secretary to Executive Vice President was secured through a private romantic relationship with our Chief Executive?"

A collective gasp echoed through the two thousand shareholders in the room. News cameras zoomed in on Michelle’s face, waiting for her to stumble, blush, or lose her composure.

Nolan took a step forward from his seat on the stage, his jaw clenched, ready to intervene.

Michelle held up a single, subtle hand, signaling Nolan to stay seated.

She stepped up to the podium, leaned into the microphone, and looked directly down at Harrison Vance.

"Mr. Vance," Michelle said, her voice smooth, calm, and effortlessly carrying through the massive hall. "If you had reviewed page forty-two of the proxy statement delivered to your office yesterday morning, you would know that during my three years as Executive Assistant, I personally audited and restructured seven underperforming acquisitions, generating four hundred and twelve million dollars in net arbitrage gains for this company."

Harrison blinked, caught off guard. "Well... yes, but—"

"Furthermore," Michelle continued seamlessly, her voice sharp as a razor, "it was my independent forensic audit that identified the seventy-five-million-dollar fraud in the Helvetic Motion draft—a fraud that, if left undiscovered by your preferred former chairman Graham Morrison, would have wiped out thirty percent of your personal hedge fund's equity portfolio by nine o'clock this morning."

The entire auditorium went dead silent.

Michelle offered a polite, icy smile. "So to answer your question, Mr. Vance: My promotion was not secured through a romantic relationship. It was secured by saving your money from criminal incompetence. Now, if you will kindly sit down, I would like to show our shareholders how we plan to double their dividends over the next twenty-four months."

For three seconds, the room was frozen.

Then, from the middle of the auditorium, Elena Rostova stood up and began to applaud. Marcus Vance joined in. Within five seconds, two thousand shareholders stood on their feet, erupting into a deafening, thunderous standing ovation that shook the crystal chandeliers of the Plaza Hotel.

Harrison Vance quietly sat down, his face bright red, completely humiliated.

On the stage, Nolan stood among the cheering board members, looking at Michelle with an expression of such radiant, boundless love and pride that it brought tears to her eyes.

The proxy vote was held an hour later.

Michelle Ward’s appointment as Executive Vice President was ratified with ninety-eight point four percent shareholder approval—the highest vote in the history of Rivers Meridian Group.
