Chapter 4 - The Shadows of the Legacy

The temperature in the private room dropped to near freezing.
Ethan didn't hesitate. He reached out, grabbed Richard by the lapels of his heavy wool coat, and slammed him violently against the brick pillar beside the hearth.
The three bodyguards instantly reached inside their jackets.
"Put your hands away!" Ethan roared, his voice echoing off the timber rafters like thunder. He didn't let go of Richard, pressing his forearm against his uncle's throat. "You pull a weapon in front of my son, Richard, and I swear to Almighty God none of you will leave this state alive!"
Richard choked slightly, but his cruel smile didn't fade. "You think... you're in control here, Ethan?" he wheezed. "You think you can just walk away from the firm? Victor left thirty percent of the voting stock in a trust conditioned on the continuity of the family line."
Ethan’s eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"
"Victor knew you were weak!" Richard spat, his eyes gleaming with malice. "He knew that if you ever found out about the girl or the kid, you'd soft-hearted fools try to burn the legacy down. So he put a clause in the family trust. If you attempt to liquidate or dissolve the syndicate's holding companies, control automatically reverts to me—unless you produce a legitimate heir who takes the Oath of Succession at twenty-one."
Richard looked past Ethan's arm at Leo, who was standing up in the booth, clutching his wooden block, his eyes wide but unblinking.
"That boy," Richard continued softly, "is either your greatest asset or your biggest liability, Ethan. If he stays alive, he threatens my control of the board. If he disappears... everything falls to me."
Ethan pushed Richard back harder against the brick, his face inches from his uncle's.
"If you ever come near him," Ethan whispered, every word carved out of diamond, "I won't use the law. I won't use the board. I will use every dark, nameless monster grandfather trained us to be, and I will hunt you to the edge of the earth. Do you understand me?"
Richard stared into Ethan's eyes. For the first time in his life, he saw something in his nephew that genuinely terrified him. The cold, mechanical corporate ruthless Ethan had exhibited for ten years was gone; in its place was a father who had nothing left to lose.
Richard raised his gloved hands in surrender. "Easy, nephew. We're family."
"We are not family," Ethan said coldly, throwing Richard back. "Harrison!"
From the entrance of the restaurant, Harrison stepped out from behind a pillar, accompanied by four heavy-set men in black tactical gear—Ethan's private security team from Chicago.
"Escort my uncle and his garbage back to the airport," Ethan commanded without looking back. "If they step foot in Maine again this week, detain them."
Richard straightened his coat, his face dark with suppressed fury. "This isn't over, Ethan. The board meets on Friday. If you aren't in Chicago to sign the restructuring deal, I am filing for emergency conservatorship of Park Meridian."
"File whatever you want," Ethan said, turning his back on his uncle. "I'm busy."
Richard and his men were roughly escorted out into the storm.
The dining room fell quiet again, save for the crackle of the wood fire.
Ethan took a deep breath, smoothing his suit jacket, and turned back to the booth. He felt a sudden wave of shame washing over him. He had just revealed the darkest, most violent side of his existence right in front of his ten-year-old son.
"Leo," Ethan said softly, his voice trembling slightly. "I'm sorry you had to see that."
Leo looked at the doorway where Richard had disappeared, then looked at Ethan. He walked out of the booth, stepped up to Ethan, and reached out his small hand, touching the faded leather wristwatch on Ethan's wrist.
"My mom told me about them," Leo said quietly.
Ethan blinked. "What?"
"She told me that your family was full of wolves," Leo whispered, looking up into Ethan's eyes with an understanding far beyond his years. "She said they lived in dark houses and spoke in numbers. But she told me that you were different. She said you were the only one who knew how to be human."
May you like
Leo locked his small fingers around Ethan's thumb.
"I want to go to Chicago with you, Dad," Leo said. "I want to help you kill the wolves."
