Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of a Trap

Richard stared into the back of the Cadillac, his teeth grinding so hard his jaw ached. The rain soaked through his suit, making him shiver violently, but the fire in his chest burned with pure, murderous fury.

"An employee?!" Richard roared, striking his palm against the sleek black door of the Escalade. "I built Sullivan Freight! I worked eighteen-hour days! I shook the hands, I signed the contracts, I built the client relationships that made that company forty million dollars a year!"

"You built client relationships using my fleet," Maggie corrected him smoothly, her grey eyes holding his gaze without a single flicker of hesitation. "You signed contracts using my software. And you paid your executives using profits derived from leases I allowed you to hold for a fraction of their market value."

She tilted her head, her gaze shifting subtly to Khloe, who was cowering under her small designer umbrella, looking terrified and deeply out of place.

"I see you’ve been spending company money on luxury assets," Maggie continued, glancing toward the Ferrari dealership behind him. "A four-hundred-thousand-dollar sports car? While our regional drivers were complaining about missed pension payments and outdated safety gear last month? You became arrogant, Richard. You thought you were untouchable because you wore five-thousand-dollar suits paid for by my hard work."

"I am the founder!" Richard spat, water dripping down his nose. "I will take you to court! I will sue you for every dime you have! You hid these assets during our divorce negotiations! That’s fraud, Maggie! Civil fraud!"

Julian Vance, the sharp-eyed attorney sitting beside Maggie, let out a soft, amused laugh. He reached into his leather briefcase, pulled out a blue folder, and held it near the window.

"Mr. Sullivan," Julian said, his voice smooth and lethally precise. "During your divorce proceedings four months ago, my client provided your legal team with full financial disclosures regarding her personal holdings, including Apex Holdings. Your lawyers—whom you instructed to 'wrap up the divorce as fast as possible so you could marry your mistress'—never bothered to conduct a forensic audit of Apex’s underlying assets."

Julian smiled, a cold, predatory gleam in his eyes.

"You signed a full mutual release clause, Mr. Sullivan. You explicitly waived all rights to claim, audit, or challenge any corporate entity held under Mrs. Sullivan’s maiden name in exchange for retaining sixty percent of Sullivan Freight’s equity. But what you failed to realize was that sixty percent of zero is still zero."

Richard’s stomach plummeted into a dark, bottomless pit.

He remembered that day in the conference room. He had been so eager to sign the papers, so desperate to get Maggie out of his penthouse so he could move Khloe in, that when Arthur handed him the thick stack of financial disclosures, Richard had simply flipped to the final page and scribbled his signature. He hadn't read a single line of the schedule of assets.

"You... you set me up," Richard whispered, his voice losing its thunder, replaced by a hollow, terrifying realization.

"You set yourself up, Richard," Maggie said softly. "For twenty years, I sat at home while you spent seven days a week building your ego. I managed the tax strategies, I structured the corporate holding companies, I secured the financing that kept you afloat during the 2008 recession when your bank refused to lend you a single dime. I gave you my youth, my intelligence, and my loyalty. And how did you repay me?"

Maggie’s voice didn't rise, but the cold sharpness in her words cut through the pouring rain like a razor blade.

"You brought that girl into our bed," Maggie whispered. "You told your board members that I was 'aging out' of your lifestyle. You laughed about me at steakhouse dinners with your executive friends while I was home recovering from knee surgery. You thought I was stupid, Richard. You mistook my patience for weakness."

"Maggie, please," Richard stammered, taking a desperate step closer, reaching out a wet hand toward the window. "We were married for twenty years! We built a life together! You can't just strip me of everything! What am I supposed to do?!"

"You can do what any terminated employee does, Richard," Maggie said calmly, pressing the electronic window button. "Find a new job."

The heavy, soundproof glass rolled up smoothly, sealing Maggie away in her warm, silent sanctuary. The Escalade pulled away from the curb, its red taillights disappearing into the thick grey rain of Chicago, leaving Richard standing in the storm.

"Ricky..." Khloe whimpered, stepping up beside him, her face twisted in absolute horror. "Tell me this is a prank. Tell me you have another bank account in Switzerland or something!"

Richard turned slowly to look at her. "I don't have a Swiss account, Khloe. Everything was tied up in Sullivan Freight."

Khloe gasped, taking two fast steps backward. "Are you serious?! You don't have any money?!"

"I have my penthouse," Richard lied desperately, trying to hold onto the last thread of his dignity. "The penthouse on Michigan Avenue is in my name! We still have that! We can go there right now, order room service, and figure this out!"

Khloe looked at him—soaked, shivering, stripped of his power, his expensive suit ruined, looking like an old, broken man standing on a street corner.

"I'm not going anywhere with you," Khloe spat, pulling her phone from her purse and frantically scrolling through her contacts. "You’re broke! You lied to me! You told me you were a billionaire!"

"Khloe, wait!" Richard grabbed her arm. "I made you! I bought you those designer clothes! I bought you that diamond bracelet!"

"Get your filthy hands off me, you old loser!" Khloe screamed, shoving him back with all her strength. "I'm calling Brad!"

"Brad?!" Richard yelled, stunned. "Who the hell is Brad?!"

"My real boyfriend!" Khloe sneered, hailing a passing yellow taxi. "The guy I was seeing before you bought me that apartment! At least he’s thirty and actually has a job!"

The taxi pulled up to the curb. Khloe yanked the door open, slid inside, and slammed it shut without looking back once. The yellow cab sped off into the rain, leaving Richard Sullivan standing alone on the sidewalk, drenched, humiliated, and utterly penniless.
