Chapter 6 - The Return to Manhattan

At 8:00 a.m., rain was pouring over Manhattan, turning the glass skyscrapers into dark, gleaming monoliths reflecting the gray morning sky.

Outside the fifty-story Whitmore Global Tower on Wall Street, dozens of news vans were parked along the curb, their satellite dishes raised, reporters standing under umbrellas broadcasting live updates.

“We are live outside Whitmore Tower,” a sleek news anchor reported into a camera, “where rumors of a dramatic internal feud have shaken Wall Street following the death of matriarch Eleanor Whitmore. Younger son Preston Whitmore is expected to seal a twelve-billion-dollar deal with Apex Capital this morning, while older brother Adrian Whitmore remains unaccounted for…”

Inside the building’s subterranean loading bay, a nondescript laundry van backed quietly into a parking space near the service elevators.

The rear doors swung open.

Adrian stepped out, wearing a sharp black suit, his tie neatly knotted, his hair slicked back. Beside him stepped Rosa, wearing a stunning black tailored dress that Vance’s team had secured for her on the drive—a dress that made her look like the rightful heiress of a multi-billion-dollar technology dynasty.

Vance stepped out behind them, carrying a heavy leather briefcase containing the original ledger, the patent schematics, and the flash drive.

“Preston’s private security has every elevator locked down with bio-metric scanners,” Vance whispered, checking his wrist comms. “Only board members and executive keycards work past the thirtieth floor.”

“I worked in this building for three years as head of operations, Vance,” Adrian said smoothly. “I know the executive maintenance bypass codes.”

Adrian walked up to the wall-mounted service panel near the freight elevator, entering a seven-digit sequence into the keypad.

BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-CLICK.

The heavy steel doors of the freight elevator slid open.

They stepped inside. Adrian pressed the button for the 50th floor—the Grand Executive Boardroom.

As the elevator began its smooth, fast ascent through the building’s core, Rosa looked at her reflection in the mirrored wall of the elevator.

For twelve years, she had worn an apron in the Whitmore mansion. She had picked up empty glasses after Preston’s wild parties, cleaned the mud from Charles Whitmore’s boots, and quietly accepted the insults thrown her way by arrogant executives who didn't even know her last name.

She reached down, gently touching the silver chain around her neck—a small silver locket containing a black-and-white photograph of her father, Arthur Delgado, sitting at his work bench in Queens.

“Dad,” Rosa whispered under her breath, her eyes steady, “we’re finally here.”

Adrian reached out, taking her hand in his. He squeezed her fingers, his hazel eyes filled with absolute solidarity.

“He would be proud of you, Rosa,” Adrian said softly.

The elevator chimed quietly.

DING.

The digital display above the door changed to: FLOOR 50.

The steel doors slid open, revealing the marble foyer of the Grand Executive Boardroom.

Through the floor-to-ceiling glass doors across the hall, thirty board members, foreign investors, and corporate attorneys were seated around a massive thirty-foot mahogany table.

At the head of the table stood Preston Whitmore, wearing a gold signet ring, holding a Montblanc pen, preparing to sign a thick stack of legal documents resting before a representative from Apex Capital.

Preston lifted his pen, looking at the board with a triumphant, arrogant smile.

“Gentlemen,” Preston announced, his voice carrying clearly through the glass doors, “with this signature, Whitmore Global enters a new era of unprecedented profit—”

Adrian threw open the heavy glass doors of the boardroom with a thunderous BANG!
